For me, it has to be the WPT coverage. It's brutal, and considering I used to be glued to first few seasons and it was one of the first poker shows I ever saw, that's saying a lot.

anything with that cackling retard on commentary. i dont know his name but i would love to kick him in the balls to shut him up.

WPT is Mike Sexton and Vince Van Patten, right? I don't think they're too bad at all. I do think that you could make a drinking game from their dialogue though. Every time Mike says "they're the kinda cards you like to see a flop with", or Vince says "he's got the pocket rockets, the weapons of mass destruction" or "ooh boy", you take a drink! You'd be drunk by the end.

Norman Chad (WSOP), on the other hand, is a different matter. He is not funny. And whamboozled is not a word.

Celebrity Poker Showdown is by far the worst.
    "I'm going to..... raise".
    *applause*
"How much can I raise by?"

It has to be all that crappy celebrity stuff. Why would anyone watch when these people obviously have no idea (most of them anyhow) to play the game, and make unfunny jokes every time the camera is on them.

    Puke.

Added to the fact that most of them aren't really even celebrities!!!

    Celebrity Poker showdown is awful.
I really used to hate Poker Superstars when it was on aswell.
Starting stacks of about 5 BB's as far as I could see and that stupid jazzy music used to drive me up the walls.

Would have to agree on that "celebrity" poker mess.
Anyone ever see Poker Weekly on Sky One? They obviously dont have the rights to actually show alot of tournaments its just two clowns talking and interviewing players (badly)? Its pretty painful now..

    What about best ones?
I think Poker After Dark is up there.. 6 handed, 5 episodes per table, fairly undiluted... High Stakes Poker is always good too.

I'm enjoying Party Poker Premier League too (every week on Channel 4). Nice clashes of personality there (Hellmuth vs. Ulliott vs. Tony G), and bad language is allowed....

I had to click A N Other - as for me the worst one is Celebrity Poker [ I think that's what it's called] The UK one where it has minor UK celebs like John Mcrirrick, [Don't know how his name is spelt] Anyone who's been on eastenders etc. - At least with the US show Phil Gordan actually says something interesting once every three programmes.

I tend not to like the many six seater studio based shows. They always start with a mountain of chips but are short stacked from the start and there's just no atmosphere.

For me the WPT is one of the best shows. I like Sexton and Patten. Their US bias is hilarious.

But the best show has to be WSOP - Chad is the least funny man on the planet - But that somehow works.

But what 99% of shows do that really irritates me - Is some bint interviewing a player who's just got knocked out says: "Tell us what happened?" and we just get told what we've seen with our own eyes.

Celebrity poker by like a million miles.
I despise everything about it, the non celebs, the unfunny jokes, the stupid idiots whooping and hollering when some idiot celebrity made a terrible play or when the blinds were raised, agh!
*goes to corner to calm down*

How are the live internet games not winning this by a distance? I thought it would be no contest!! As fun as passing a kidney stone.

the ultimate poker championship thingy on bravo.

Its like a lesson on how not to play tournie final table poker

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,666 ✭✭✭Imposter

What was the european tour sponsored by absolute called? I've seen it on Eurosport. It was one of those ones where they played on an 8 seater semi-circlular table with all players facing the cameras. No atmosphere whatsoever and the german commentators were worse than awful.

    QFT Eoghan.
Grub Smith and the other Richard??guy babbling totally clueless. But the celebrity events do come very close. Its like they're just jumping on the band wagon as a last attempted to salvage their careers.
Half of them haven't a clue.
What about the ads on FTN though, tips from the pros, that are played repetitively every 5 minutes and sometime twice in the one slot?
Caprice- "The biggest bluff I ever made..(pause).. was a 2 and a 3. I was bored ..(pause and lick bottom lip).. so I went all in...(bite bottom lip)". F$%k off.

The best is celiberty poker and dont say its not because the wpt is crap, they show so few hands so you have no idea how those people play or what they fold on, it sonly seems to show you good hands, while poker showdown is great its fun, there is some good banter and you get to see every hand

Some of the internet games on channel 843 used to be very entertaining depending on what commentators were on. Some good special guests to like Johnny Chan and Chris Ferguson. Pity it's gone now.

i would rate wsop and wpt as very good, just behind the ept coverage although i am not really a fan of john duthie as a commentator, hes boring, he knows his stuff, but he is just boring.
the celebrity poker showdown is terrible and quit probably the worst, but this other american show, they have a cash game which isnt too bad but they have a tournament show which is brutal, they have good players but the coverage is the worst i've seen on tv. i'm not sure of the name, i think it might be ultimate poker showdown or something like that.

as for commentators i said my piece about john duthie, and i genuinely like the guy, i've met him a couple of times, but i think he is not suited to commentary. the other guy that gives me a pain in the *ss is barney boatman, i hate listening to him, he just turns me off, i watched half an hour of the betfair thing and decided i couldnt listen to him any more.

my favourite is jesse may, i think he really makes a game more exciting, i would love to see him on the ept.

Was watching Poker Superstars on FTN last night and it seemed like a total crapshoot. Players delighted to call all-ins with 92 and "race". Fairly useless programme.

I liked the William Hill Grand Prix....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

What happened to 843 anyway? Were they pushed around by Sky when SkyPoker was due to launch? It seems to have ALOT less content than before, and has hour after hour of interactive roulette (!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭Scouser in Dub

superstars maybe a crapshoot but Colin Murray is a **** hence the EPT is tough watching

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

the live internet games shouldnt even count imo, just utter tripe.

poker superstars is the worst by far, 4 world champions at the one table all with 6-7 bb's each, joke of a programme.

Agree with this but you're missing the vital bit from Caprice's quote -

"The biggest bluff I ever made.. (pause [I think its more of a sigh than a pause] ) ... was a 2 and a 3 [vital bit coming up - - - "not even sooted" [more pausing/sighing etc... ]

Back to topic - I don't like the constant repeat of poker shows, like on Sky 204, and whatever about the commentary on live shows, the G. Smith efforts on the online poker series on Sky 204 are dreadful, imo. More time is spent laughing/mocking user names than talking about hands.

Do we need an Irish poker channel? (now that broadcasting is going digital, it makes new niche channels, like the upcoming irish property channel, more viable possibilities.??

I vote for Bops and Solkjear to present it!

If they present like they post well.... waits for hilarity to ensue. :D

jaysus pocket cams in the se...it would be a goldmine as all the idiots wanting to look good on tv

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 658 ✭✭✭Hawk Eye

The worst one is "The poker Den Cash game" on sky sports were they use notes and sport stars from a selected field who would struggle handling chips never mind the queens nut.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 780 ✭✭✭Captain Tom

i used to really like the WSOP coverage but those mind numbing 'Thte Nuts' segments have really put me off it. every year they get longer and more tedious. if i have to watch Chris Ferguson throw a card at a piece of fruit one more time i may kill myself.

i thought the Irish Open coverage was abysmal too.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 797 ✭✭✭meathman 007

yea agree with a lot of the comments. Poker Superstars is nothing more that a glorified crapshop with absolutely no skill in involved - first hand a player would look down and aj and move all in......

However if we forget about the actual program itself for a minute, the biggest asshole on tv has to be chris rose - the guy from full tilt and poker superstars - it really is painful to watch/listen to him.. ....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,055 ✭✭✭Four of a kind

yeah cele poker showdown is pretty bad. WPT is a final table crap shoot at the best of times.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,013 ✭✭✭kincsem

One-off tournies like the Irish Open, etc

This got my vote. The Irish Open was a good tourney, but the TV coverage was weak. I thought the coverage improved after the first night. Padraig Parkinson did a good job.

Anything with a semi-circular table, and a commentator "who knows how to play poker" (but is not a poker player) is not ok. There is a difference between knowing the rules, and knowing the game.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,039 ✭✭✭Theresalwaysone

Superstars is by far the worst.

I don't watch very much poker on TV but I saw the WPT coverage in America and thought it was a piss take, a rip off of all the other poker shows. Apparently not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 22 Goremount

Has to be all celebrity poker especially that american s hite. Totally clueless and NOT FUNNY
I am the only person that thinks colin murray is not that bad, he and duthie seem to have a good raport. Maybe its cause i am a Nordie :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,145 ✭✭✭bottom feeder

have to say its that celiberty Sh@t gets my vote.... RUBBISH :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 76 ✭✭eamonzo

High Stakes Poker is class Gabe Kaplan is the man. Negreanu is great to have at a table, his Ming impressions were hilarious. Matusow the train wreck is always good to watch.

I watched a couple of episodes of poker after dark and didn't think it was great.. dread to think what some of the other shows mentioned here are like so!

Yeah, I really liked that show too, Pokernight Live, great commentators Dr.Tom, Mark Bannin etc. all good cash players, excellent guests on the show and then the eye candy to booth.

Unfortunitly its been taken over by the owner of the gutshot (thinks hes a comidian / celeb) and by casino games.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 698 ✭✭✭Sirtoyou

    celebrity poker is crap
poker superstars is a crapshoot as proved by hansens allin blind every hand heat
Professional poker tour seems one of the best imo available on youtube
it follows the mtt from the start to the final table not just the sensational plays

    For me is A.N. Other...

Either Party or Stars do it and its called the Poker Den

Basically its filmed in a set made to look like a basement and they don't use chips, all the betting is in cash. It just looks plain nasty to me and really grinds my gears....

A close second for me is the recent t.v. coverage of Sky Poker. Stupid stupid commentary from one of the idiots who is either hale or pace...Errr

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,571 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

    Norman Pace, yep.
The graphics on sky poker are terrible too. Big multicolour columns that represent chip stacks. Even the 2D tables on pokerzone were better than this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 388 ✭✭mrflash

i hate the ultimate poker challenge, its terrible, i agree about poker superstars as well, i forgot about that one as i dont watch it either. actually most of the shows on tv are brutal, but i like to watch the wpt and wsop, they have their weaknesses as well, but they are a long way ahead of the competition.

the ept has the best coverage of any poker show on television in my opinion, but i would like to see better commentators. i think they should hire jesse may if he is available for it. he is without doubt in my opinion the best poker commentator working in europe, he might even work well with john duthie, duthie is very knowledgeable but he lacks excitement and murray hasn't a clue, he just cracks fairly average jokes and for some reason is still getting away with it.
