I just read this now. It's very sad, but he had a good long life. I'm ashamed to say I've only seen 'The Seventh Seal' but I loved it, and even just having watched that, I can understand what a great director he was. I keep meaning to watch more of his films. Maybe they'll show a few in tribute (and hopefully not at 2am)

Sad to hear this. RIP. Just saw the documentary on him a few weeks ago.

I must watch another one of his films tonight.

Sad news - I have only seen the Seventh Seal so far, but it is a truly stunning film.
Persona is on Film Four tonight at 2.25am - strange that it was scheduled for today...

    But RIP.

Am I the only one who would get a laugh if someone up to his funeral dressed as death with a huge scythe?

    I'll get me coat.

Nah that would be quite good! Max Von Sydow would be perfect.

I'm willing to bet the BBC4 interview will be shown on BBC2 in the next week.

    Mike.

I hope RTE or TG4 show something too.

RTE had a little piece there on him on their 9pm news, acclaiming his visionary talent and his movies. Least they recognised him.

Says a lot about the him that RTE did quite a substantial tribute to a swedish arthouse director. Truly stunning film maker, and I was just arguing with my mate the weekend about his superiority as a film maker to Spielberg:rolleyes:

    RIP:(

I hope they - RTE - show Face to Face.

I emailed RTE, asked if they were planning to show any Bergman films in the coming days or weeks, and got this reply:
    Hi John

Thank you for your query. RTÉ Scheduling did investigate the possibility given the death of Ingmar Bergman yesterday, but we do not currently have any Bergman films under licence for transmission. Given his importance as a film maker however our Acquisitions department is currently investigating what programmes or films might be available for transmission later in the year.

    Kind Regards

    RTÉ Communications

Fair enough I suppose. Surprised they didn't have Seventh Seal at least though.

Top of the pyramid in the ranking of film directors. Too highbrow for the Empire magazine (Scorcese fanclub) brigade. His best work was from the '50s and '60s but there's no way RTE would show screen these black and white subtitled masterpieces. They're all available on DVD though.
