South East England...which town?

So I will be staying over a night in england before getting the ferry on to France from Dover. I'm really at a loss as to which town/city to stay in. I was thinking of Brighton but is there anywhere a little bit closer that would be decent for a nights stay. Bit of food/drink etc.

    Dover's a dump.
Canterbury is probably the best bet or even London.
    Plenty of trains to Dover

I kind of guessed Dover wouldnt be up to much. I will be in a car by the way and I want to avoid London as I've never really driven around it before and its a bit much. Will look into Canterbury.
