Going to play Grange Castle on Tuesday ( hopefully the rain will take a break ). Just looking for any opinions on the course. From driving by it is would appear to be in good nick.

    Is it any good ???

Haven't played it since they done it up a few years back but always liked it... Hmmm, you've given me an idea for my own sneaky mid-week game now - Thanks! :)

I play it quite regularily for my sneaky mid week game and it is generally in very good condition. dont play too early in the am though as the greenkeepers are very sensitive. One am we played they continued mowing the green until they had finished rather than let us play though. After some gentle words they moved off other greens but left flags out etc to annoy us...anyway the shop "had an agreement not to let anyone out" so...now that thats off my chest.....its not terribly challenging there are some very nice holes esp the first (loads of bail out room but hard to par), third (OOB on LHS) fourth (big Dog leg left) 8th (nice par 3) 11th nice par 3 , etc etc finishing with nice (but not long) par 5 18th that is very birdeable and good matchplay last hole....you will enjoy and, if playing half decent will record a good score.
There is another 3 beign built and there are an additional 7 (of the "old" back 9) in play for €8! great value for a quick skip around.
Enjoy. (any if you find any pro V1s in the lake on the 4th....theyre mine!)

Just let me clarify - the old back nine holes are still there and you can play em for 8quid??? Fantastic! Didn't know that... cheers.

have played there many a time and it's a nice course, usually in pretty good condition and the new holes have helped toughen it up a bit.

The only issue is that it is a little easy, if you are driving it anyway well at all then you can't really get into trouble. Also the par 5s are all very short and reachable, with only the new one having any protection for the green. The last should really be a par 4 imo, unless off the very back tee you are likely left with a mid iron to the green if you get a drive away. I've have my best scores there by 2 or 3 shots and much more often.

Apart from being a little easy it is a great little course.

sorry, to clarify...there were originally 18 holes then they built another 7 which are now in full time use as part of the new back 9. (they still use the old 17th (now the 10th) and the 18th (still the 18th). The original holes 10 to 16 incl are open for play at (i think) €8, or €14 if you want to play them twice. still good value but i woudl agree that overall it is quite easy. This is not a bad thing for a public course though...just pretend you are playing off 3 shots less than you do and try and put in a score!

...oh, and they are currently building another two holes to have 27 in total...Well done to the Local Council!

I've played here a fair bit, as it's only 10 minutes from my house. It certainly stacks up against any other course I've played, and is miles better than Silloge Park. Any mates who've played are very surprised at how good it is. There's 3 of us hoping to join next year, so finger's crossed.

I was playing with a couple of lads from there yesterday at Milltown. They seemed to really like it.

How much is the membership there?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,710 ✭✭✭bogmanfan

It's associate membership only. €350 for the year, and you get money off green fees (which are pretty cheap anyway). We're doing it to get our handicap, maybe play in a few comps. Their website has been down for ages, but I asked last time I was there. Names go down in November for next year.

Well, played the course earlier today. Have to say I was pleasantly surprised. Nice course in good condition and as another poster said there are some interesting holes. All in all excellent value for money. :):)
Very much re-commended and I will definitely pay another visit.

Paying the price now after getting fried by the great weather, typical gob****e by not wearing any sunscreen or a hat. :(:(:(:(:(

That's great that the old 7 holes are open. Last time I played the full course I was wondering why they seemed to be still maintaining them.
Played them on Wednesday and I must say €8 is great value for a mini practice round. Even though the greens were in rag order it was much more enjoyable and useful than €8 worth of balls at the driving range.

Only downside was the old fart in front who was playing three balls on every hole even though he looked back and saw me waiting at the second and a few times after that. I have never had to try so hard to resist the urge to fire a ball in someone's direction! How much value does he want out of his 8 quid?

Jesus - playing THREE balls?? Now that IS taking the p*ss when there's someone waiting behind...

I usually get out once a week or fortnight for a game of par-three with one of my mates for the laugh - I think we'll be heading in the direction of Grange Castle and the 'old seven' in future tho - handy as anything...
