    Hi all,

I just bought a 42" HD TV and first off Im well impressed with it!!

Just wondering.. I have NTL so I've read that I'll need to wait until the end of the year before having HD quality coming through from them.

Until then, to watch anything at all in HD, will I need a HD DVD Player and new HD DVDs??

Im guessing thats another €250 ish for the player and then whatever else for the DVDs?

    What have I done... ? :D

Dream on. Your looking at over EUR600 for a player, or buy as PS3/Xbox360.

Get an Upscaling DVD player, they aren't as good as HD/BR players, but are much better than a regular player. It will play all your existing DVD's, and only cost around €120.

Yup, I'd agree with this. I picked this up while back although I think there's a newer version (the 5980) available for about €80 from Pixmania now. There's a noticable difference even in normal DVDs upscaled on my Tosh 37" LCD. It'll do me until HD sources come down in price.

An upscalling DVD player is a waste of money as it the HD TV is any use for regular TV it already does just as good or better upscaling.

HD on NTL could be a few years away. it's barely on Satelitte.

Blu Ray seems to be the winning format, get an PS3?

According to the head fella in UPC, HD will be on NTL Digital by the end of the year. Believe it if you wish :D

Yes, but there is little content for next few years.

Thats not a HD DVD Player, its a DVD player with a HDMI output. It won't play HD DVD's, only normal DVD's

You might want to cancel those. That's not a HD-DVD player.

This HDD recorder upscales everything to 1080, including any TV channels you run through it. I run my NTL box through it into a HD TV and the picture is much better than the standard didge picture. Don't know if you can get one without the speakers to do the same thing though.

And its about €300 more than the original poster wanted to spend. Seriously, am I the only one who actually bothers to read all the posts in the thread before replying?

Anyway, that Phillips Upscaling DVD mentioned a few posts up (the 5980) is only €99 in the Phillips Store in Dublin (Dame St) an extra €40 should see you set with a decent enough HDMI cable. Probably much cheaper online. They give a good picture when compared to SD and they're very easy to make region free.

Well, actually, if you read his post correctly, nowhere does he mention what he wanted to spend. He said he 'guessed' it would be around €250, not a limit is it? Seriously...

Also, the Philips upscaler is fine if you just want your DVD's to be upscaled. The LG player can upscale everything you watch. Worth the extra few bob in my opinion.
