Like stupid as hell action? Who doesn't? And this film looks to be more beautifully stupid than most.
    First impressions over here...
    And trailer..

I am now officially looking foward to this - terrific cast too: Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen, Monica Bellucci.
Looks like a fun way to lose some brain cells...

    It looks absolutely fantastic! :D

Could be this year's Crank, easily.

Loved the trailer, I was sold the minute Motley Crue's "Kickstart My Heart" came on.

    Looks like fun alright.
Enjoyed the bit with him knocking out the guy by shooting out the drawer.

Been waiting to see this for well over a year now. The trailer is just the icing on the cake, for what could well be the most enjoyable ott action film of the year.

That film just looks damn fun, looking forward to it.

Saw this today and loved it!

It was ridiculous, ludicrous, lacking in plot and depth, but it was really, really fun.

And I certainly wasn't expecting a Children of Men sequel -
The plot is pretty much Clive Owen protecting a baby!

    9/10.

    Mmm...Monica Belluci...

This isn't a remake of Hard Boiled is it?? I saw a screen shot of Clive Owen holding a baby during a shoot-out and it's the first thing that came to mind, but I haven't heard them to be officially linked.

No, but that shot was a homage to it though.

I'm going today myself. I'm looking forward to it immensely. It is rare that you get an 18s movie these days, so it will be good to see some refreshing no holds barred action.

Just back from it... it has everything - violence, humour, creativity (50 creative uses for a carrot) and classic one-liners.

Laughed more during this than Superbad.

Having now seen it, I can say that it is a really good movie. The action was so deliciously ludicrous, especialy the bit with
: him flying through the windscreen of the BMW into the oncomining van, landing in the back of it and blasting all the guys inside

Great soundtrack too. I'll be easily won over by the first lick of AC/DCs If You Want Blood (or anything else by Acca Dacca, to be honest), but in particular when it is playing during a mid air gunfight!

Don't go see it if you're expecting a serious action movie, it's over the top and funny, I thought it was great, really didn't take itself too seriously.

I don't think I could pick any especially ludicrous bits, the whole film was like that :)

Walked out after about an hour. Terrible, terrible film.

The action was not 'over the top' at all (I don't know if that's even possible these days anyway). Without a context, a story, good characters, or realism, an action movie has to be really inventive to keep my attention and this film lacked all of those qualities.

    Edit: It's not funny either.

Its Tom & Jerry with automatic weapons, or perhaps more Itchy & Scratchy!

No plot really, daft as hell, but no more ridiculous than any Lethal Weapon movie after the 1st one, or Sin City for that matter, plenty of great lines and Giamatti, well, he is great whatever movie he's in.
Clive Owen looks like he's the Gibson for the next generation, great to watch.

I truly enjoyed it. Definetly up there with Crank or Demolition Man in the no-brainer action leagues. Expect a review soon. ;)

Yup, crank is a good comparison, Statham rocks, although Transporter 2 kinda sucked, mainly the CGI Audi, hope I didn't ruin any christmasses there!

saw it over the weekend. Very good turn off brain movie
    Really enjoyed it

Great fun - I award it the Crank Award for 2007! Completely and gloriously ridiculously over-the-top, with the most interesting use for carrots I've seen, and plenty of genuinely funny moments. If you in anyway liked 'Crank', then you owe it to yourself to see it. Indeed if you want to switch your brain off for a while, there's little better out there currently in the cinema. *goes off to buy carrots*

Alrighty guys, you can see my review here. ;)

I know I've said it's going to be this year's Crank, but after seeing it, I think it's even better, and a little different in it's own way.

Saw it during the week, and to be honest, I think I was too sober to enjoy it!

The plot is irrelevant, just a contrivance to get from one ridiculous shoot-out to the next, and Monica Bellucci is just a prop, but the target audience for this one won't care about that sort of crazy talk!

Have to be careful here, cos it would be all too easy to spoil the over the top shootout scenes, but it's like the makers watched 'Hard Boiled' - where Chow-Yun Fat shoots many many bad guys while holding a baby - and said.. heeeeyyy.. there's a template here!

Swap Clive Owen for Mr. Fat, and complete the sentence 'Clive Owen shoots bad guys while...." and you pretty much have the boiler-plate for most of the entertaining scenes in this movie. The thing is, John Woo did it better years ago, so what's the point!?

    5/10 for me.

In fairness, I certainly see where you're coming from, but I felt that Shoot 'Em Up went for something completely different to what John Woo was going for.

I mean, you can hardly compare it to A Bullet In The Head, The Killer, or A Better Tomorrow. Mainly because Woo's films were very serious in tone and they had much better and more compelling plots, but Shoot 'Em Up was very comedic in nature. It was silly. I'd never call A Bullet In The Head silly.

So while there's a undenyable John Woo flair to the action scenes, and the baby in a shootout scene was obviously nicked from Hard Boiled, I just don't think it's an entirely fair comparison.

I'd probably agree that Woo made better films, but he didn't go in for silly, comedic films, so I wouldn't agree that he "Did it better years ago."

Watched it earlier on tonight and I didn't enjoy it all. Not a patch on Crank imo!

The 'over the top' action scenes were pretty run of the mill. I didn't find it anyway amusing. Irritating more like it.

I'm starting to think Giamatti isn't that much an actor and can only play the one role really.

    Charlies Angels for the lads!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,711 ✭✭✭spacecoyote

went to see it the other day with a couple of lads from work & it was bloody great fun. We laughed from start to finish, sometimes for the comedy & other times for the levels of farfetchedness(???) I walked out of the cinema with a big smile on my face, and thats all I could ask for. I don't really agree with the Woo comparisons. Yes there are nods to the films, but I don't think I'd really even class them as the same type of movies

Wow - I went in not too sure what exactly I was going to get and I was bursting with laughter as the killing just NEVER ended!

This was an excellent movie, two thumbs up and what not :) "John Woo's Wet Dream"? I now understand.

    Couldn't agree more.
Loved almost every cheesey second of it. Plus Death by Carrot.
Saw it on Monday with some mates and ethier we were laughing or going YEAH! as he dispatched bad guys.
It did feel as thou I was playing a Gaint Video game.
9 out of ten carrots. It looses two for the basic Plot. But gains one back for the Final scene in the diner.

There is a thread about this movie already, just so you know. I really enjoyed it. Deliciously cheesy and over the top. My favourite was the bit with the big neon sign, and the BMW crash.
