    Hi Folks,

I need to collect a car in the UK and get it back to Ireland. The car is in Leek in Staffordshire. I could collect in at any of the ports on this side.
So any suggestions to get it over?

    Cheers

You could justget the ferry over as a foot passenger & arrange to get the car delivered to the port. Look up Recovery Services in the local area where the car is located.
Alternatively fly into East Midlands or Liverpool, get a taxi down to Leek & drive the car home yourself. It will probably work out cheaper. Don't forget to transfer your insurance.

I used John Flynn Transport recently - he picked up the car in Leicester and brought it to Carlow for 400 euro - no headaches or hassle and a short drive back to Kildare. You can contact him on 087 2990141

Last 3 cars I bought (all in last few months) have been boat/train over, collect drive home and onto ferry. About €25 on boat, between £15 and £30 usually for train fares and about £100 home on boat, add in £60 for food and diesel/petrol.

All 3 runs have been over in the morning and return that night affairs with cars from Oxford, Cheltenham and Chester (but came home via Cardiff and Pembroke/Rosslare from Chester, don't ask :) )

Rough day and drive but easily done.

I'll give this guy a call tomorrow. Anyone else have any dealings with him?
€400 sounds good for getting it collected without the hassle of going over myself...

When I saw this post, first person that came to mind was John Flynn. Then I saw reply. Specializes in this type of thing.........Absolutely sound.

OP - Have you already examined the car yourself? I'd be very reluctant to pay for a car I hadn't seen.

I heard about him on the Classic car forum where a couple of people have used him - you could always post there again if you want peace of mind. I found him cheaper than flying over and bringing the car back by ferry but then I can only do that at weekends and I'd budgeted for bringing the wife as she's a great map reader (and good company too, of course  ). I found that it'd cost me near enough 400 euro for that with summer fares and having to book the trip at relatively short notice. its hard to plan these things months in advance.

You haven't said if you're buying the car unseen but if so, there are companies over there who'll check the car out for you and give you a full written report/HPI check etc etc. It'll cost you another £250 odd though so its all starting to add up. You know best what the story with the car so its your call. For low value stuff its not so bad but for big money its a big risk. I've bought three cars unseen (all classics). Two of them were private sales and worked out fine. One of them was from a dealer and it was a dog - he was selling 'on behalf of a customer' so I should have known but he was a top rated specialist with the owners club - still - no comeback.

I haven't seen the car yet, but it sounds good (famous last words? I hope not:p )

    This is the one...

The mileage and history seems to check out. It's not a high value car, but I won't get one like that in Ireland with that kind of mileage.
With vrt it will cost me less than 5k, so another few hundred for collection is not so bad.

    Nice car alright.

I intend to change once I she gets the ring on my left hand at the end of September. I never considered that there were people who would take it from England for you, so thanks for starting the thread. If I do buy from England, I still would consider going over to view/drive my potential purchase (thinking 0f '02 520/523).

Would have liked a 1st gen surf, but I need something more practical. I already had a 2nd gen :)

Thanks to all who recommended John Flynn. He collected my car without any problems. I can't recommend him highly enough, fantastic service he provides. €400 for collection. I gave him the details on Monday and he had my car back in his yard yesterday!

    Cheers.....

I've just realised I actually know John Flynn! I could have gotten him to collect my recent purchase for me but I didn't know he did that sort of thing. Ah well, I'll know in future.

It sounds too good to be true! Does he bring a dozen at a time? I can't see how it would pay him!

Glad it worked out well. Sounds like a really good deal. I liked the "road trip" element of collecting my one. But I suppose if you're caught for time then it's a good way to go.
    Best of luck with it.

will he pick the car up off a private sale anywhere in england or does he just pick it up from a dealers?

Does any one know anyone who will check out a car in England. A friend and I occasionally buy and bring cars home. It can be timing consuming and annoying if you go over only to find a lemmon. We have been buying from private dealers and also at auction in Manchester (only from repuable / corporate sellers)

You can get the AA or RAC to go and give it the once over for you. Not cheap though.

Paddy - is it only Manchester you buy from?
I'm in England 2-3 days/week buying - happy to look over a car for another trader. I normally am in the Midlands - Nottingham,Derby,Birmingham,Coventry etc..
