& why i like them - here the are in no particular order -

batman 89 - thought this was really scary when i was a kid, jack nicholson is really great as the joker .. its funny as well as action , like the way they made it "dark" & everything

Billy Elliot - just thought it was cute, but it shows what the miners were all worried about back in those days

Francis ford coppola Dracula - theres loads of good actors in this & good special effects

Disney - Hunchback of Notre Dame - the only cartoon in my list , i think this didnt get as much attention as some other 90s disney films like the lion king / aladin etc , but the story is better i think , maybe a bit too many songs ..
i always thought the story of this was more "grown up" , the colours are great thoughout it & some of the animation at the end is very good.

    the godfather films
    goodfellas
    casino
I like all gangster films , goodfellas is the best of the 3, then casino, godfather some bits are a teeny bit boring but otherwise good.

    titanic -
i think the film makers deserve credit for going into the details in this films to make everything as it was in those days .. a bit long , but great film

the green mile - i thought this was the most scary film , & sad . Tom hanks best film

witnail & I - dunno if many people know this , english film with Richard E Grant as withnail, as alcholic out of work actor in london in the 60s with his friend thats telling the story of them going on a crappy holiday, to Withnails uncle country house .. very funny

some of my pics like titanic were big films ... but others like the english films not so well know
what does everyone esle think of those films ?

I think as far as favourites, you've picked some interesting ones, such as Dracula. A lot of people hated the film because of Keanu Reeves, but if you block him out mentally, it's a very good film.

titanic - are you feelin ok????

I always find people are far too negative to titanic purely because it garnered too much undeserved praise on its initial release.

Its not an amazing film, it borrows a bit from A night to remember but thats understandable to a degree due to the common source material, and the plot is stereotypical hollywood, yet people have let films with equally bad plotlines slip without complaint because it had eye candy (*cough* faceman I point you to Transformers)

Not a great film, but damn if its not impressive in how well made it is.

    My 2 cents

I was watching batman 89 again there a few weeks ago, for the first time in like 10 years. Was hoping I would like it this time, but I still though it was pretty bad and absolutely hated Keaton. I like Burtons other movies though

Have to agree on your gangster movies, pretty class. Although one of my favourite movies is Carlitos Way. Absolutely love it, and if you haven't seen it already, then go watch it ASAP!!

I think any respectable movie buff would know of withnail & I. I liked it but wouldn't make my top 10 list for sure.

Quick list off the top of my head for me would be something like this, in no particular order :

    Oldboy
    Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
    Carlitos Way
    Empire Strikes Back
    Training Day
One of the Indiana Jones movies
    Schindlers list
    The Usual Suspects
    Memento
    Infernal Affairs

At the moment in no particular order here are my ten...

    Cross of Iron
    - A Sam Peckinpah classic, it is imho the ultimate anti-war war film (along with the film below). James Coburn gives a great performance as Steiner.
Paths of Glory - IMHO this is Stanley Kubrick's best film. Kirk Douglas puts in an amazing performance and I challange anyone to have a dry eye after the final scene.
Dr. Strangelove - Another Kubrick classic with Peter Sellers stealing the show.
Field of Dreams - I know why is this here, but I just love this film. Also James Earl Jones is one of my favourite actors.
Glengarry Glenross - I work in sales, this film is a must watch for anyone who works in Sales. The cast is to die for and the acting and script is top notch. Watch out for Alec Baldwins best bit of acting ever.
Shawshank Redemption - This is just a classic.
Ronin - For the car chases alone this is included.
The Wild Bunch - Sam Peckinpah again and his take on the western and the end of the western era.
Conspiracy - A truely chilling representation of the Wannasee Conference that planned the "final solution". Based on the actual notes taken during the conference. Greats cast but not a feel good film.
Fever Pitch - I'm an Arsenal fan, the reason this is included is obvious.

Thats the list for the moment, I have forgotten films and I am sure I'll be going doh forgot that or this but hey thats the fun of these :)

Lets not let this descend into one of those supremely pointless threads where people just list of their top 10.

the script was awful, (did the characters have to call the other characters by their name in every line of dialogue????), the acting was ham, it was 90 minutes too long. need i go on?

If you don't I might! Terrible ****e altogether. :p Sorry OP!

A couple of nice choices in there all the same. The Green Mile and Batman are both excellent. Burton always does a fantastic job of the bad guys in his films, the penguin was excellent in the next installment of Batman, the headless horseman in Sleepy Hollow (Christopher Walken!) was a better terminator like character than Arnie could pull off. The Boogie Man in Nightmare Before Christmas, he was entertaining to say the least.

I thought Keanu was well suited to Dracula which I enjoyed, but not overly. I have to give it an extra bit of credit for being a proper piece of filmmaking rather than some crappy blood covered les-fest though. Good vampire films are hard to come by. If anyone hasn't seen John Carpenters Vampires I'd recommend you get your hands on it.

The mere mention of Titanic in any top 10 (unless it's to say that Titanic is one of the 10 worst films of all time*) automatically relegates that list to the ignore pile. That film was god-awful Hollywood tripe.

*may not actually be one of the worst films ever made, but it's a terrible, terrible movie none the less.

heh, this is coming from the guy who *loves* transformers (which I might add suffer from the exact same faults, except for length.)

jaysus you really have it in for transformers. TF was very entertaining despite if's faults. But it had different faults than titanic. Titanic was supposed to be a love story. You saying titanic was better?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

I'm saying titanic was very entertaining despite its faults, the same way Transformers is entertaining despite its faults.

I just find it funny that you would completely shoot titanic down for faults that present in transformers

I havnt declared Transformers worse film of the year (that honour goes to Spiderman 3), or scolded people for naming it their favourite film of the year, but I do feel put out when I see a film which essentially had the same strengths and weaknessess being singled out as a horrible film by the same people who hold up transformers

ok let me break it down as i see it.

Cameron's Titanic is a love story set against the backdrop of a sinking film. Its 3 hours long. The sinking ship bit is nice for the few minutes it happens, but thats all.

Transformers is an action film about big tranforming robots kicking the crap out of each other with a sub plot of a nerdy kid trying to score a really hot girl out of this league. The film is 150 mins long. For most of that we get to see transformers doing their thing.

titanic takes itself quite seriously, tf does not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,698 ✭✭✭✭BlitzKrieg

    ...

Both films are over the top blockbusters that have Special effects being the biggest trump card.

They both take a very cliched and predictable approach to their storyline and follow them through.

The sinking ship is in it for a few minutes, and the transformers actually fight each other for a few minutes, the rest of both films follow 2 demensional characters nobody cares about.

They both are stocked full of safe cheesy jokes that everyone can laugh at and the dialogue in both is hammy and pretty much rubbish.

the only thing titanic does worse then transformers is that it goes on for longer.

But I am not saying they are identical films I dont know where you got that, I am saying though that I find it surprising that someone would absolutely love one film and absolutely hate the other when the two films are by the books sfx ladden blockbusters which seem to mess up on the exact same points.

I wouldnt call Titanic an awful film, but I wouldnt put it in my top 10, I'd give it a 6/10 or a 7/10, the same that I gave Transformers.

lets just agree to disagree so blitzkrieg as i dont agree at all and we're kinda hijacking the thread unintentionally.

the attraction of both films are completely different, one delivers, one doesnt.

and my opinion is neither delvered, but were entertaining enough.

You're asking a nerd to admit that a chick flick isn't bad. You might as well ask him to admit Star Wars is a pile of ****. You're wasting your time there Kreiger.

the reason i decided to post that list , is that people in work were talking bout fav films .. & a bloke that liked say batman , also liked spiderman, x-men etc .. so only liked one type of film .. i couldnt answer what my favs were for a few min .. had to think about it ..
then people thought it was a strange mix , but i dont think you have to like the same types of films all the time,

i liked batman 89, batman returns & forever were ok .. but i cant stand any other superhero films ..

i liked Francis ford coppola Dracula - but not into Dracula films in gereral

Everyone thought it was weird that i liked titanic , & liked gangster films & the green mile (i suppose they are not girly films)

i just think sometimes in a combo of things make you like the film , for me i like it when i think the film makers have put effort into the film & when they put a new spin on a old story & make in better like batman /disney hunchback film

& then if the actings good , special effects etc, its good when you can sort of *forget* your at home or in the cinema because your so interested ,, that to me is the sign of a good film !
