Gender Discrimination

    Hello All,
I went to apply for a part-time job (that was advertised on the shop window) in a very well know Irish chain. I asked an employee there who I should talk to about the job. She replied that only girls were being hired for the job but pointed me to the manager saying I could ask her If I wanted. By this stage I had noticed that all of the employees were female (About 10 that I could see).

So I asked the manager about the job to which she replied "Sorry, we're only hiring girls" and kinda directed me to the counter to show all the female employees as if to prove her point. I didn't really argue with her because I was so shocked. It's clearly completely against the Employment Equality Act. It would be one thing to discretely reject male applicants but to openly say its only for girls is a bit far. I'm really annoyed! And I really needed a job...

A sandwich place. Its hardly a female-dominated industry is it? I mean I've seen loads of lads work in other ones!

Even Tesco employs pimply faced lads and not just girls on Checkout now.

Yep, total discrimination. Do report them.

    Equality Authority -

<snip> work on a franchise basis, so I would suggest you try to contact <snip>. He is a fair and decent person and would sort this out for you.

not sure if it is a conspiracy but the ones in stillorgan, parkwest and off kylemore road all seem to exclusively employ women as well. I'd have to say in general it does seem to be a female dominated industry, the various cafe sols/muchies etc etc seem to be 99% female staffed also?

In some pubs, the lads work behind the counter, the ladies on the floor collecting glasses and getting orders. As for <snip>, not surprising. Look at their clientel. In the places I ate at, it'd be mostly guys (unless said place was within a company eg: InBetweeM).

tbh, i'm covinced they "encorage" females for checkouts, and other frontline departments

an irish retail company i worked for, insisted on having the best looking girls working on the customer service desks.

Personally I think that makes sense. I know that's awful, but the reality is people (in general) do respond better to pretty people.

Lads, don't name places please and don't encourage people to do it either. Thanks.

Keep talking in generalities, not specifics. We would appreciate if people didn't "name and shame" and that other's didn't encourage people to do it. It's unnecessary, if it's advice that's needed you don't need to be specific and if you want to "out" someone do it in the pub or something.

There are still certain supermarket chains that won't give checkout jobs to men and they continue to get away with it.

I know, in basic terms, some jobs are more suited to the female gender than the male or vice versa. Maybe the place I'm talking about is one of them, but it doesnt excuse what they did, especially so openly. However I dont know if its worth persuing the Equality Authority or whatever...I might just send an e-mail to <snip> or something. I'll see.

    EDIT: Sorry about that.

When I used to work in a supermarket none of the men wanted to work on checkouts. The company wanted all employees to be proficient in all areas of the shop and thats when they started putting guys on the checkouts.

I worked in a department store and none of the men wanted to work on the tills either. because the store-room was a cushy number.
I worked there for 6 years and none of the women ever got put foward for management but all the lads did.

tbh i can see their reasoning

customer: can i have a refund?
Pretty girl: no, thats against our policy
customer: thats ok (while staring at her chest or whatever)

sex sells, even in retail! sounds terriable, but most men rather get servered by someone nice looking, then a total minger.
