Internet connectivity on campus?

I'm heading into college for the first time this Autumn and I'm pretty sure I'm DCU bound, hopefully with accomodation somewhere in Res. My question is, is having a Windows OS essential for the internet in DCU or is it possible to use OS X for macbooks?

As long as you can plug a cable in to the wall point you should be fine. You'll have to pay Computer Services a visit (or go through your portal page) to have the network point enabled though.

There is wireless on campus which can be accessible no matter what OS you use. You can not, however, access it from Res. If you want internet connectivity from there you have to pay the appropriate fee to Computer Services, I think it works out as €75 per semester.

Cheers, so is there a cost to the wireless all around campus then?

If you are in Res facing the science block you can pick up wireless ^___^

Apart from the library and res, is there anywhere else with laptop network access points. Or could you just plug out a network cable from a computer somewhere like the henry grattan and plug it into the laptop?

Not really. The switches don't have port security (or whatever it's called) enabled, but they don't use DHCP either, so you'll have to check what the machine's IP addr. is first. And CSD will almost certainly object if they see you.

In the CA labs there's no DHCP so ya gotta assign and IP manually, but in the henry gratten building MAC filtering seems to be enabled so ya gotta spoog your MAC address to match one of those from a machine on the network...

    to summarise:
The entire campus has free wireless except for the residences.
There's nowhere to plug in your laptop with a cable except the Mezz café area in the canteen.
If you live on Res you can pay for a wired connection.

    €60 per semester.

You are free to use any Operating System you wish. Don't expect support for some of the more exotic ones.
