    Hi folks,

I got my previous vehicle serviced at a fiat garage who charged me about €100 an hour for their labour time alone which was a tad excessive on a car only worth about 10 times that.

My sister recommended a great friendly mechanic to me who she uses and never charged me more than about €70 for a fairly comprehensive service.

The problem is that he's located out near Wicklow where my sister lives and so getting my car serviced involves a long trip followed by having to hang around the area for most of the day waiting to get my car back.

So what I'm looking for is a good, cheapish and reliable mechanic in the Dublin 6 area. I have a Toyota Yaris arriving from Japan in the next few days and don't much fancy paying dealer garage rates to get the car serviced (though I have heard that Toyota garages are a bit more reasonable). I know there is an argument for having dealer stamps on the book to increase resale value, but I figure some kind of invoice of work done by a mechanic is much the same thing (shows the work that has been done) for a lot less money.

Any recommendations would be much appreciated.

    Thanks

There are a couple of independents on Harrison Row (a lane behind Coman's Pub) in Rathgar. IIRC, Dave Curry Motors and Joe Lynch Motors. I haven't used either in quite a while, but they were alway reasonable.

Thanks for that, I'll have a look there and see. It's literally right up the road from me so would be ideal.

Any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

If you go down Ranelagh Road in the direction of the Barge and take a left, through the arch, just after the billboards and the new building, there are some Iraqi guys in there who I found to be reasonable and good at their work. I was able to bargain with them a bit and pretended to know what I was talking about but they seem to be decent guys.

The main dealers are expensive so I'm looking for a good mechanic/garage to complete a service on a Ford Focus.
Anyone recommend anywhere from Finglas to the city centre area that are reasonably priced.

    Thanks

I used a guy in harolds cross before to change tie rods after failing the nct, cant remember how much it cost but he seemed very honest and im fairly sure i was suprised how little the labour was. I cant remember his name but i got it from butlers tyres in harolds cross, im fairly sure his first name was paddy, possibly paddy burke. If you rang butlers tyres which is also in harolds cross and asked him if he knows of a mechanic in harolds cross im fairly sure he would give you his number. Of all the mechanics i have been to id reccomend him over the others.

I use Dave Curry's for both work and private vehicles. Last time I got my Ibiza serviced by them they where half the price of what a main Seat stealer charged me and it was an identical service job. So they'd be my recommendation.:)

Thanks for the suggestions guys, will be booking the car in shortly for a service and for suspension adjustment (see my other thread: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055129819&page=2 )

Will either go for the Dave Curry's or the guy recommended by Butlers Tyres. I like butler's tyres, they are very cheap and the guy working there (very funny looking man - always literally black from oil etc) is pretty decent too:)

Yea i rang up butlers to see if they could do the tie rods as they had changed my break pads previously, when he reccomended the other guy i figured it was a good bet as the guy butler does seem fairly sound. Its annoying the way its so hard to find good trades people to do work.

Butler recommended a garge in Rathgar to me today. I thought it was Andrew Curry? Is this the same place as Dave Curry? i.e. same family.

Winton Garages on Landscape Road, Churchtown , next door to the Glenside Pub (Thatched Roof) is an excellent independent sales/repairs (all makes) service.

Believe you me, I've been through a lot in Dublin 6 and I could write a book on the main dealers alone.

Ask for Peter (Boss), gentleman and fair prices.

Yeah it's the same place. Andrew Curry is who I deal with. I think Dave is the fathers name.

I phoned up to price getting a CV boot replaced.

He quoted me 70 to 80 and said they would have to use a universal boot since it was common on my model car to experience difficulties in getting the original of - this universal boot solved the problem.

Dropped it in a couple of weeks later on this basis (I thought).

    (a) He charged me 115 euro.

    (b) He said that they had trouble removing the boot - exactly the trouble he described over the phone earlier and accounted for in the quote.

    (c) They scraped the back end off their garage wall and then acted all suprised and said they knew nothing about the scrape.

So, my advice would be to stay away from these jokers. Also, advise your friends to do the same.

Pay peanuts and get monkeys, some of these back street garages use the cheapest oil and service parts and take short cuts or spend more time on the job because they don't have the correct service tools so it is false economy in the long run.

A few years ago I had the front brake disks replaced on a FWD Transit by a garage (Now gone). They "roasted" the wheel bearings dry of grease with bottles trying to remove the hubs because they didn't have a pullers. I had to get the bearings and hubs replaced 4 months later. They should have warned me to replace them at the time.

Only go to someone you can trust and has a good reputation.

Sorry to bump up an old thread - but these Iraqis - does anyone know the name of the garage or have a contact number for them?

    Thanks
