Work experience

    Hey all,

I’m doing a FAS course at the moment called “Introduction to Computer Maintenance and Networks”. From October the first I have to do a 3 week work experience placement and I’m having a hard time finding a place that will take me.

Doing the work is no problem and the work experience is completely unpaid and I’ll be covered by FAS for any kind of accident or injury on the job so they have nothing to worry about but even so I can’t find anywhere that will take me on.

I’m in south Dublin but I don’t mind travelling if I need to but I’d rather somewhere local….ish lol. I won’t be fully qualified after the course if I can’t do the work experience so any help, suggestions, places to look into or get in contact with would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Did you try your local HSE office? Ring the HSE recruitment in your local area. I know where I am they are always happy to get work experience slaves for free for a few weeks.

Despite what some computer science professors might say, at the moment it is difficult to find work in IT. My advice is never work for free, even if it is just work experience. After your course is finished specialise in a certain area and stick with it.

The problem with unpaid IT work experience is that you are essentially asking someone to let you loose on their valuable (possibly critcal in some cases) business systems. They have no indication of your competence level, they will need to supervise you (costs money) and the fact that you are on free work experience means that you don't have a career to damage if you do stuipd/dangerous things. I would expect most companies will also look at three weeks as too short to be useful let alone provide a return on investment.

I second this. I did work experience in HSE, after I did your course in Ballyfermot. You do it in Ballyer yourself, by any chance?
