Feedback after applications

If I want to get feedback as to why I was turned down after an interview or application what should I put in the statement?

Are H.R departments obliged to reply to such queries?

HR and no, they can throw your request away; best bet is calling them directly (you should have some contact person there).Don't expect to get anything useful out from them though (usually "We found a better qualified candidate" is as far as they would go since they can't talk about other candidates with you).

As Nody says ring them and be polite. There is no obligation to discuss your rejection and it might be their policy not to do so. If you're lucky you may get pointed to a specific area of your CV that didn't make the grade.

The obvious exception to the above is public sector recruitment where things can be pushed a little further.

The reason you wont get a response if turned down at the early stages of a recruitment drive is usually because the reason would get them into trouble ;) (i.e he had goofy hair )

This is translated on the interview form as "Candidate appears to be uncertain on the answer" or something similar though (just in case you where thinking of asking for the interview form and all other data they have on you and sign away your chance to get a job in the company again). At least if you got a HR department who knows how to educate their interviewers on "proper" rejection reasons (;.
