NAS Options (Storage)

I'm looking for a storage solution for work.

We have begun acquiring alot of data and need a central repository to store it. It currently resides on 2X 250GB and 1X 500GB external hard drives and keeps growing. I reckon I'll need at least 4TB of usable space and that again for backup purposes.

    I reckon a 2X (5 bay NAS with 5X 1TB hard drives in RAID 1?)

Anybody have any recommendations for this?

Don't have one, I'll present it to the powers that be and watch them choke :)

I'm looking at the Thecus N5200BR Pro. 5 Bays, supports all terabyte drives and a few other options. Where is the best place to buy this sort of stuff?

    From scan.co.uk it's coming to £3,849.99.

    That's 2X Nas and 12X 1TB hard drives. (2 spares).

What applications will be accessing the data? Or is it just file-storage?

I recall posting up a very similar reply a few months back..

    basically you've two options...

SCSI-attached storage... a SCSI disk array connected directly to an existing file-server, instant additional disk-space... benefits and drawbacks depend on the file-server itself. Pricey and usually meant for single-use applications (database clusters). Needs third-party backup. Fujitsu's SX30 or HPs 2500 would be the sort of kit in mind.

Network attached Storage... standalone disk+cpu box supporting CIFS/NFS over network. Cost varies hugely from cheap Netgear disks-in-a-box solutions to the higher-end products from Netapp that support snapshots.

    I reckon a 2X (5 bay NAS with 5X 1TB hard drives in RAID 1?)

Wouldn't one disk per NAS be idle/spare in RAID1 then? And are 1TB disks even available yet? (edit: whoa they are!)

Depending on the storage access requirements RAID5 would be a better bet... if you're planning on purchasing a second NAS just as a backup role then might be an idea to remove all user access to it bar an rsync account (or Unison might be a decent alternative).

Thanks for that Kali, I do believe you replied to a post I made a while back.
I think I was looking at massive SAN solution.

It will be mainly storing a large library of CD's ripped in a lossless format.
I don't think that access times would be a massive requirement.

Looking at RAID 5 and it seems to be the better option alright.
As far as I can make out you can hook one Thecus NAS up to another and it can securely backup to the other.
