Sandyford to Dundrum?By foot, bike and luas!

I'm probably moving to Bracken Hill/Sandyford view apartments in the next couple weeks (viewing tomorrow..) and I'll be working in Dundrum. Could anybody offer me any advice on the old commute?!
I'm car-less, and would gladly take the luas except rumour has it the nearest luas stop is about a 30 minute walk, and that dundrum is also a 30 minute walk (which I don't fully understand!)
I'm thinking about investing in a good bike and hoping someone could let me know how long it takes to cycle to dundrum from sandyford (taking it easy enough -i'd like to avoid breaking a sweat before work!) and if the route is uphill much, or has cycle lanes, or even if there are secure bike parking facilities at dundrum?

I'm moving up from Shannon, so I really have no idea about the area and would appreciate any insight! Thanks!

Sorry if I appear negative, but to me Sandyford has everything that i wouldn't like in apartment living.

Out in the middle of nowhere, huge industrial type developments, car sales rooms etc etc.
Place is still a building site.

Now having said that I am not familiar with where you intend to live and apologies if put you off,but everytime I see Sandyford dissappearing out the rear window of the car i get a sense of relief.

Just being honest... best of luck

I would agree with that comment about Sandyford, it's not a bad area but not somewhere i'd like to live.

Apartments in Dundrum are around the same price, or you could find somewhere in Rathmines (10 min walk to Luas in Beechwood or Ranelagh)/Dartry/Milltown.

I'd say you could cycle to Dundrum from Dartry in 20 minutes. On the luas its 5 mins or thereabouts!

It's almost like there is 2 parts to Sandyford -

1, The industrial estate 2, Sandyford itself (Past Kilternan b4 Stepaside)
If you are the industrial side then transport isn't too bad but sandyford village only has the 44 bus and the luas is a good half hour walk away.

The apartments in Bracken Hill are gorgeous, more reasonably priced and you get more for your money too but it is a little isolated. For work and socialising you would be much better off looking in Dundrum, Ranelagh, Rathmines and maybe even Cabinteely as there are loads of apartments available in those areas.

If you do go for Sandyford try for Belarmine rather than Bracken Hill as it has the, limited, but handy 46B bus aswell as the 44

You could cycle to Dundrum in about 15 minutes id say - on the way down - the way up might be a different story!!!

Anyway, long story short - since your are new to Dublin, I would definately recommend going for Dundrum. Try daft.ie, it'll give you an idea of whats out there!

http://www.dto.ie/web2006/jp.htm - This is handy - It's a walk and cycle journey planner including luas and trains - You just type in where you want to go and where you start from
    Good Luck!

Its about a mile and a half to Dundrum town center if you cut through Kilcross housing estate. I'd say you'd cycle it in about ten minutes. The walk would take 20 -25 mins. Its all down hill on the way down. The way home of course is a different matter

agreed, although it depends on exactly where he is living, it's a big estate. Through kilcross on the bike and down the hill in 5 mins. Walking, I'd say closer to half an hour. The Ballaly luas station near dundrum town centre is nearly as close to the OP as the kimacud one so luas isn't an option really.

I think you mean, over the M50, but before Stepaside and Kilternan?
