Gmail appear to be winning the battle against spam.

I'm very happy to say I seem to be getting virtually zero spam in my Gmail account recently. Whatever Google are doing to stop spam appears to be working. Just wondering if any one else is finding this.

I'm still get 20 odd spam emails filtered into my gmail spam box each day. Google do a good job at identifying that stuff at least.

Yeah they are fantastic. I've not gotten one piece of spam in my inbox so far as I can remember Fair play to them. I know it's sad but when you clear the spam from the folder it says 'Hoorah, no spam here', that always brings a smile to my face. Good to see someone had a sense of humour and was allowed to use it.

Absolutely no spam makes it into my inbox with gmail either. I do get hundreds of messages into the spam folder every week though :/

Same here. The "report spam" button isn't hugely useful mind you. I was getting spammed by some feckers that I asked repeatedly to remove me (it was a genuine business) and reported it about 50 times without any joy. I should have just filtered it...but hey....that button's easier. :)

Yea, it's superb. I'm always a bit worried that it might classify some actual mail as spam, but to this day I haven't been arsed trawling through the ~700 messages that inhabit it.

There's something very satisfying about going in there now and again and deleting everything:D Simple pleasures eh

Never had any problem with spam in gmail. They dont stop everything but it doesn't make it to my inbox so i'm happy. normally have a quick look in my spam folder once a week to see if anything ended up there accidentily, or to check the latest offers on viagra.:D

Used to get a bit of spam back in the day, very rare now. Tempted to put adverts.ie in the spam/block list, as I can't unsubscribe from a thread on it.

I've had a few wierd emails (office social events, soccer leagues, a few job offers) bounced to me, sent to a very similar email address without a . in the username.
My address does have the dot. A while back Gmail stopped caring about dots in usernames, so it seemed that I got all the mail. Just aswell.

Am I thick or is there no way to create folders/filters for mail based on patterns?
Ie. mailing list tags in subject lines, anything with [MyFavouriteMailingList] in the subject gets dumped to inbox->MFML folder.

Is that what stars are supposed to be used for?

    I loves my Gmail I do! :D

I used GMail since they started, and get spammed a lot. But hardly any of it makes it into the Inbox.

I now use Google Hosted for my business, and personal mail. Working wonders :) Very happy.

Hotmail, on the other hand, doesn't seem to have any spam filter at all. Its letting things that even the most retarded Basyeian filter would catch.

Why use hotmail apart from using it for spam?
    :)

Gmail is excellent, no spam at all.

Hotmail, god I remember them. Still pretty popular are they? I avoid them, amount of spam I used to get in my hotmail account was unreal!

Ah, the only reason I see it at all is when I log into MSN and the "You have 20 new messages" toaster dialog pops up.

Jeez shouldn't Hotmail be caught by the swear filter.

Switched over last week, excellent. Anybody know how to get it to download Hotmail messages. Have tried and it keeps saying it can't do it. Would be just to automatically move them to spam as Hotmail doesn't seem to filter them.

Seanies32, I've tried this using the Gmail MailFetcher, but it doesn't work. I've Googled it too, seems no one has gotten it to work with Hotmail. :(

Anyway, I'm glad most people seem to agree with the spam reduction success of Gmail. Thanks for all your comments. :)

Hotmail is no loss though its annoying having to delete the spam if you log into MSN.

Gmail has a great spam filter alright. Beware though, it does catch a few false positives. Its incorrectly put a few emails from a friend of mine (sent to a group) into the Spam folder so its advisable to have a quick glance through it before deleting your spam.

    Gmail > Hotmail
(Although any email in the world > hotmail)

Every day i check my gmail, might get 20 or so new spam types, all nicely put away in the spam folder to be forgotten about... I can think of 3 or 4 emails ever that have gotten into my inbox that are spam, and no emails at all that should have gotten to my inbox ending up in the spam folder...

When it comes to hotmail, it's a joke, proper stuff always ending up in the spam folder, spam gets into inbox etc. Only reason i have it is i had it before i had gmail, so some people still email me there, plus for any microsoft stuff...

Oh, and to echo what someone else said earlier, i like the fact that google do have a sense of humour, why not eh?
