Lost Passport, need birth cert?

A sort of PI, but have no idea where else this would fit in.

I've somehow managed to lose my passport, last place I had it was at the airport when I returned a few weeks back and I can't find any trace of it now. I can apply for a replacement at the local embassy but I need a birth cert. Where does one find their birth cert (or a copy of) as I don't have one and my parents lost whatever original one there was.

Is it just a simple matter of ringing up somewhere and having a copy sent to me?

Yes, it is. In fact...i believe they may be obtained online in some cases

Who keeps these records, is there a central registrar or is it the hospital where you were born?

You will need to contact the General Registar's Office - more info can be found here

Pop into the GPO, and get a new one issued to you. Believe it or not, thats what The General did, several times.

The General Register Office has local offices in most counties or you can apply here: http://www.groireland.ie/docs/BirthsEnglishAppform.pdf

It takes about three weeks though, I think, so if you need it urgently, you should let know when you're applying.

You should also report the passport as missing as soon as you can.

Seems like everything to do with the registrars office is in Roscommon now , and they cant do online ordering , I had to get my marriage cert off them , and they say they dont have the secure facilities for online ordering , you must go via snailmail , you can send cash , cheque or credit card details.

Bit lax for this day and age isnt it ?

Apparently the reach program hasnt stretched as far as Roscommon yet !

Thanks for the info, looks almost too straight forward. Could get anyone's birth cert once you know the relevant details which are not hard to get!

Yep - You can get ANYBODY'S birth cert once you know their name , date of birth and mother maiden name I think.

I did it for my aunt - They said nothing, asked no questions - Just handed it over for €8! I think it's a bit weird!

I got it in a place on Lombard street in dublin, central registrars office i think

births and deaths register on Lombard Street in Dublin. Just down from Pearse Street Dart Station. You can go in and queue.

Report your passport missing, you need a form signed by the Guards as well.

I had to do this recently (feb of this year)

If you were born in Dublin, head down to births and deaths register on Lombard Street. You will need to know your full birth name, parents names and the hospital you were born in. I'm not sure if they have records for births outside of Dublin.

They will give you a copy of your birth cert there. I want earylish (10am) and did not have to queue at all. Was in and out in 15 mins.

You can also apply by post to Roscommon, but this takes ages.

Then you need a passport form and the two passport photos (they are very, very picky about the photos on the new passports, so get them done somewhere decent) . You need to take these to you local garda station and have them signed. Make sure you fill out the "lost passport" section of the passport form and have the Garda sign that bit of the form too.

Then send it off. I used passport express at the post office and had the passport less than 2 weeks later.

Thanks, I'm living abroad so it might be a bit more complicated.
Going to give my apt. a thorough search this weekend just in case it's somewhere in it and I'll get onto my local embassy on Monday and get onto that place in Roscommon for a birth cert. Now I need to find out where I was born, I suppose my mum should remember that!
