Automatically hide applications on system launch

    Hi,
I have Adium and Skype set to automatically launch with OS X boots up.
System Preferenes > Accounts > Login Items > ticks next to Skype and Adium in the Hide column

The problem is that both of these applications actually display themselves on launch and I have to minimise them manually.

    What am I doing wrong?

I think these are programs which launch themselves automatically after a start.
Go into their prefs and turn off their built-in auto-launch and try again.

Actually, I've just checked Adium and I don't think there is an option to auto-launch it.
If it was me, I'd remove and re-add it to the Login items.
Failing that, I'd post on the macrumors.com forums. :)

I think this is the kind of thing Automator is designed for. Am i right in saying you want both of these programs to launch but you want them to be minimized straight away? In that case i wuold say build an automator workflow and set it to run as part of your login procedure.
You can get good info on the support page of Apples website.

    Thanks for the tips guys,
I modified my preferences last night but I never tested them, hopefully when I boot up this evening I will have a clean desktop :)

I don't know about Skype but I have Adium set up this way and it hides just fine.

And there's a difference between hide and minimise. Hiding will hide the app completely until you click on the application icon in the dock. Minimising is when you shrink a window into the corner of the dock.
