Gibson v's PRS

    Hi folks,
I know this may have been done before but cant find the thread. Im seriously considering buying a Gibson LP but after reading about the quality control problems at Gibson (from loyal Gibson players) my concerns were a bit raised. I tried a PRS Hollowbody over the weekend and it was amazing. Any thoughts?

    Cheers

Besides the usual "Go for a decent Japanese instrument", I'd go for the guitar that I prefer. If you prefer the PRS, get the PRS.

PRS have been some of the most consistant guitars I've played, tried out quite a few of them, and they all seem to be exceptional guitars. So from my experience, I'd say they've excellent quality control, and I've never heard any horror stories about them like I have about Gibson. I'd take a PRS Singlecut over a Les Paul any day.

Every PRS that leaves the factory is a flawless instrument, that's one thing you can say anyway. I have a love/hate thing with PRS - I love the build quality, excellent materials, shape, gorgeous flamed & carved tops etc, and i hate that they don't make a guitar for me, cos i'd buy it in a shot.

Like Karl, if i had the money to buy a high-priced singlecut style guitar, id go for a PRS over Gibson any day.

In fairness, there isn't really any Japanese equivelant to PRS. Not like with Gibson, where you'll have a myriad of excellent copies, like Tokai, Edwards, Bacchus and so on.

I used to have serious GAS for PRS, but since I've gone more for the 7 Strings, they don't really interest me any more. That said, PRS have made a couple of custom 7 strings, and they look absolutely incredible, but the price tag was something in the 5 figures, as far as I remember.

Still, the only Singlecuts I've seen that would beat PRS are by Abyss, but those are well costly also.

Aye, when i say they don't make a guitar for me, what i mean is:

I don't play laquered necks, hate the feel of them. So...what's left - the CE series?

Yep, fine, except then i look at them compared to one of my JCs - lower grade maple (CEs don't have 10 tops), big chunky neck heel, smaller frets, worse trem, smaller radius, worse upper fret access.... I mean, there's really no comparison, as much as i'd love a PRS, whats the point in me spending big money on a guitar that's only half the guitar compared to what ive got already..?

But if it is your type of guitar, i'd have no hesitation in buying one, very well made instruments.

    Ah yeah. ;)

I once played a matte finish Custom 24, and I have to say that was exceptionally nice. Probably the nicest PRS I've ever played. Personally, I've nothing against laquered necks, even my Stealth has one, but if they're not your thing, the matte finish is worth checking out.

I suppose, you could always sand off the finish, and tung oil it. ;)

Fujigen do a good job of it ;)

I have played either an Edwards or Tokai PRS copy.. and it was lovely.. I just am unsure who made it...

I would go with second hand Gibson Les paul - http://www.chrisguitars.com/gib90lpstd-csb-gold.jpg - $1500 .. good value.. nice guitar..

But really go with what you prefer.. I like PRS stuff.. but it just doesn't .. do it for me.. I will though at some stage own one..

Check out Patrick Eggle Guitars. The Berlin is very similar to the PRS style. Hard to come by nowadays though.

That "toguitars" site is just dangerous :(

Reminds me of Trey Anastasio's guitar.

Phew, good thing they had pics!

I wonder if that helps with the whole "guitar is not an equal-tempered instrument" thing.

All I know is that my Fuji strat sounds mighty so it does! Zero difference with playing and I can't hear the difference.

    Those are micotonal, no?

I'd love to see a close up of that fingerboard, they are some of the bandiest frets i've ever seen, and I don't mean the ones that are intentionally bandy. Even the straight ones look like someone hacked them on with a sledgehammer.

I record with my Les Paul Standard on the Right and my PRS CE22 on the Left...always....

I think that the two guitars compliment each other like no other two guitars....but if I was pushed...I'd have to say my PRS is my baby....the guitar just sings to me !!!
