My dad (77) has sky hd. The channel says it is sky hd but the pictures are clearly not in hd. Any suggestions?

Would it be Star Trek the next generation on sky one?

Many programs broadcast on Sky one HD are not in HD, (look at ST:TNG), the way you'll know is that in the Sky one Tag on screen a little HD will appear beside it (compare lost to something else). Its actually very few programs in HD on Sky one HD. if you have a look at discovery HD, its all in HD.

Is it a true HD TV (native 1080 lines) connected with a HDMI connector?

Yes it is Sony Bravia 1080p set with hdmi connector and he has sky sports hd and it does not look any different to the normal sky sports for hd broadcast events. Could it be a problem with the installation?

check the hd setup in the picture setup menu, could be set at a low 576 setting

Usually the TV should say if it's getting 576i or 1080i from the box

Yes, Sony's always say what the incoming signal resolution is.

Is there a chance he's viewing via Scart AV1, and not HDMI AV4/5?

While Scart is able to make a TV auto change to the relevant channel, HDMI ports can't do that. You've to press AV button on remote continually until you get to the AV channel that is the HDMI one (Sometimes AV5 on Sony).

Agree with the above , when my sky HD was installed ( I was at work ) the guy hooked up the scart , hooked up the HDMI and left it working through the scart . No HD .

Luckily I knew what to do ,so no harm done , but not everyone would !

Go into setup , make sure the output is set to either Auto or 1080i ( I prefer 1080i ) and that the right connector type is selected on your TV and you should be fine.

Remove the scart lead completly and just go with HDMI for the tv conection.
That way there'll be no confusion.
