Just introducing myself

Hello!

I have been reading this board for ages now and admiring all your photos, there are some super talented people here.... So on the advice of the posters here, I got myself a starter setup of a 400D with kit lens and a Sigma 70-300 zoom / macro thingy. I also picked up Bryan Peterson's book Understanding Exposure after someone recommended it here, which is probably the best bit of advice I have read on this board so far.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello, I hope I can become a regular contributor here. I have set up the 'ould Flickr just a minute ago with what I think is the best of what I have taken so far - http://www.flickr.com/photos/8972364@N06/

Hi Robbie, welcome along, some nice shots on your flickr. I would suggest though(this is an old chestnut of mine) that you consider putting some larger sizes up there. 480x320 will never do your gear or your photos any justice.

Good introduction. You read for a while before you posted & got a nice sample of work to woo the masses. Even a publicist wouldn't have handled it better.

Good point. What is the going rate for image sizes on Flickr? I will adjust that in the future.

Yep, meeting some of you at events is a definite, I am all up for some hands on advice, tips and tricks.

Hehe, thank you! I have to say, the sports photos you post here are superb, and are probably the main reason I got the 300m zoom lens. If I can get good on that I may go for the L beast you use, but I have a long, long way to go to get to your standard.

I got it from Kea photo (after reading so many positives about Kea here). Cost just over €615, but unfortunately there was a bent CF pin when I got it so I had to fork out another €100 to send it back. Other than that I love the camera, and am getting the hang of it now. The Canon manual is ok, but when I read through Understanding Exposure (a book I highly recommend), everything about the camera made sense and I understood the settings, which I didn't do after reading the manual.

I have the image size on Flickr sorted for new images and just loaded a couple more. No need to squint to see future pics...thanks for the tip!

Your rowers on the Liffey seems to suggest you are familiar with my favorite hidden away Dublin treasure .... the War memorial park ... I take regular walks along the river there ... so if you see a 6ft 3 cubed man holding a monster camera it is probably me ... introduce yourself ...

Looking forward to meeting you at one of the meets ... may even buy the book ... but I've loads ... may I also recommend Langfords Books Basic and Advanced photography ... great technical reference books ...

Some very nice shots there. I also have one of those Sigma 70-300mm lens and it's a very good lens for the money. A bit slow in low light, but pretty good otherwise. I use mine alot. The macro funtion is handy too.
