i was at the dentist the other day. i went for a routine 6 month check/clean. when i got there he asked how i was. i told him i had some questions about a crooked tooth i have. i asked about getting it straightned and possibly getting veneers on some teeth. he then went on to take about 10 x-rays of my teeth and tell me what i needed and that he would do it. he gave me prices of what he would charge and told me to get back to him. i left so confused as i didnt think a routine dentist could do this work (post core crown, crowns and veneers). when i got home i suddenly realised that he never even looked at my teeth re the clean and check. i was a bit pissed off considering that i filled and signed my fiorm for this to be done and it wasnt.

anyway what i want to ask is should i not be going to see a speicalist for this kind of work?

    thanks:confused:

In my experience, most dentists can carry out this type of work and I am attending Dentist at the minute. I asked about getting veneers and my dentist advised me whether it was necessary or not as it is purely cosmetic in my case. I am still thinking about it. Depending on where you live, you should consider getting a second opinion, if for nothing else, from the cost point of view as they do vary.

Also, for want of a better pun, "word of mouth" is very good when it comes to Dentists and Doctors alike. No harm in asking around if anybody has had experience of this dentist and that is probably the best feedback you can get.

thanks for that but just thinking, the guy didnt even give me his name! i will call the surgery and find out. i also just managed to get an appointment for the dental hospital to get my teeth seen. it will be interesting to see what they have to say although i have to wait until october for the appointment. i dont mind waiting though as from what i have read on here they are very good. the girl on the phone though did say i would be seen by students. is this the norm in there?

Well, I believe the Dental Hospital is very good. A relative of mine lives in Dublin and has gone there - he reckons they are excellent and as there are specialist areas e.g. those who do RCT, Veneers etc. you can't really go wrong. The fact that your Dentist didn't even part with his name is somewhat unusual. Is he part of a big practice? All dentists are supposed to have their names on full view with their qualifications etc. Best check it out. Good Luck.

i didnt know that, no, he didnt have his name or qualifactions on view. the practice has about 4 dentists in it and only the guy who owns it (the main dentist) has his name on the door outside. no one else has there names up. the quote he gave me was on the headed paper of the owner! anyway, wont be going near him again! roll on october and the dental hospital. thanks for your help!
