How to recover old e-mails and addresses?

Lost my trusted computer to lightning strike
Got a new one and thankfully also was able to save the harddrive from the old computer which is now running as an external harddrive in an enclosure.

So all data is still there, if a bit difficult to find sometimes.

What I can't seem to find though, are all old e-mails (there are a few important ones gone missing) and e-mail addresses.

Anyone got any idea in which directory that stuff usually hides and how to retrieve it?

    What email are you using?
Are you using Outlook/Outlook Express or some sort of Webmail?

If it is Outlook then look in C:\Documents and Settings\<Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook. I think you have to turn on show hidden files/folders and try to import them from that.

    As ruu said.

Beware that certain versions of Outlook will only support certain pst file versions. Not sure about Outlook Express though.

*.wab files are Microsoft Outlook Express address book files.
*.mbx files are Microsoft Outlook Express mail folders.

Outlook Express store folder (where old emails and address book are kept) should be in folder :

    C:\Docs & Settings\<Your Username>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{< a long number ! >\Microsoft\Outlook Express

As said, the address book(s) are .wab files.
So do a global search for all these on the disk in question. Copy them all into say shared documents folder.
Then go on Outlook express > File > Import > Address Book
and fill in the location of each address book data file and click open.

    .mbx are Eudora Mail?

    .dbx are OE Mail.

Do a wild card search ie *.wab;*.dbx

You can copy them from the search window.

Wanted to import Outlook data files (pst's) into outlook express. I'm afraid my knowledge of Outlook Express is quite limited.

    Can anyone help?

    Gillie, in Outlook Express:
File > Import > Messages, select Microsoft Outlook and follow the prompts.
