Well you've made a huge step by this post, keep posting and reading this forum and other similar ones, such as 2+2, which you'll see referenced if you have a dig around the threads.

Play hands, post them up here for discussion, reply in threads and listen to the advice and criticism you receive. Importantly though leave your ego at the door and a thick skin will be very beneficial.

    So welcome to the forum....

Also there's loads of books to help with your game and to give you the basics, there's been loads of threads on the good ones, search this forum, there's a veritable gold mine of information contained within...

Play one table at a time online. Look over your hand histories afterwards. Look at the big hands you won and lost. Notice what good and bad bets/raises/calls/checks/folds you made and the decisions they put you to on subsequent streets. You will face these situations again and again. Try to play in position. Raise pre-flop

If you're playing online, you have to get either PokerTracker & Gametime+ (free stats overlay) or PokerAce HUD. PT&PAHUD costs $80 I think all together but the difference it will make is invaluable.

However, this is mainly if you want to play cash games.

If you're starting at the, or near the, start, play micro-limit cash games. You can get $75 free on PartyPoker and $50 free on other sites if you have a look around. This will get you 20 Buyins at 1c/2c, the $75 will get you almost 20buyins at 2c/4c. Learning post-flop play is crucial, and is something a lot of people who start off with Sit N Gos miss out on (IMO).

Start off reading "No Limit Holdem Theory and Practise" by Sklansky, it's an above average book for NL cash games and will provide you with solid fundamentals, play hands and post ones where you felt lost in or didn't know what to do here and on 2+2, have a good look around on 2+2, some of the theory posts are absolutely fantastic and are truly beneficial to a developing player, there's less here on Boards but still some great posts knocking around.

There's another thread on this forum about online cash advice, have a look through that, there's a 6-max starting hand guide which you could start off using, until you've an understanding of what you're at.

If you do start off with cash games, get pokertracker and analyse your own play after playing. Read the pokertracker guides for analysing both your own play, and your opponents.Look at crucial hands and think where you went right/wrong. Always ask for help, you'll get it and it'll stand to you.

The more educated you become, and the more practise you get, the more you'll improve. Reading is key, as you won't pick a lot of concepts up just through practise, and by just playing you'll miss out on a lot of solid theory that could benefit you. It's the combination of the two that'll get you playing and profiting well.

Oh and welcome to Boards :)
