DVD Drive

Having previously had no problems with it, My laptop suddenly seems not to recognise the DVD drive at all. I'm running Windows XP. Whenever I place a CD or DVD in the tray, it whirrs for a moment, but it does not Autoplay or take any other action. When I checked in My Computer, it seems as if the DVD drive has disappearead…

Having previously had no problems with it, My laptop suddenly seems not to recognise the DVD drive at all. I'm running Windows XP.

Whenever I place a CD or DVD in the tray, it whirrs for a moment, but it does not Autoplay or take any other action. When I checked in My Computer, it seems as if the DVD drive has disappearead entirely. It is not listed in the Device Manager either. And when I performed the "Add Hardware" in Control Panel, and search for any new / unidentified hardware, it does not find it. There is no evidence that the computer is aware that there is a DVD drive attached at all.

Any advice you could give on this matter would be gratefully received,
