I know the wii isn't marketed as a graphical powerhouse but how good is it, is there an improvement over the gamecube, is it comparable to a playstation 2 maybe ?

I dont have one, but from what I've seen in shops it looks similar to the gamecube.

Wasn't the Gamecube technically graphically superior to the PS2?

I think there's the potential for a decent improvement over the Gamecube, though it hasn't been utilised yet it seems

there isn't really. the graphics chip is about the same as the gamecube... i believe there's more memory there so it can do a bit more, but nothing overly exciting compared to 360 or ps3.

the main point of the Wii is the interaction anyway, not the graphics.

Generally the Wii is better than the GC and PS2. Resident Evil 4 was the best llooking thing on the GC and still is on the Wii. But as it has been said there is certainly room for the Wii to use its potential. We havent seen it yet but i think Metroid Prime will do the Wii justice.

This page seems to predate the Wii's release but it gives the detailed specs.

And the page for the GameCube:

I havent bothered to compare them.

I reckon it is a bit better than the PS2, most people buying it expect that I would imagine. It is its unique controls that make it what it is. I have my super charged PC for quality graphics in games :)

It may not be as powerful as the ps3 or 360 but its much more powerful than the last gen systems.
I would put it between the xbox and xbox360 in terms of graphics.

The Gamecube had more powerful graphics capabilities than the PS2. I have to say there there's not all that much in it between the GC and the Wii, but the Wii has the edge. Might be a lot to do with the extra memory alright, but from the outset it was never designed to be a graphical powerhouse like the PS3.

We still haven't seen any games that do the Wii justice. Sonic and the Secret Rings is propably the game that pushes the hardware the most but still it's not pushing the Wii to it's limits. I think we will see what the Wii can do with Metroid Prime and Mario Galaxy which looks gorgeous. Still the harware is a long way off challenging the 360 and PS3 for power.

Graphical capability of the Wii is close enough to the original Xbox. Supposedly it is better in some respects and a bit worse in others. It'll be a while before we see someone developing to that level for it, but that's normal. The best looking Xbox games weren't released until quite late, and same goes for Gamecube (RE4 came out in 2005, the console was released in 2001, 2002 here). Whether a lot of developers will bother is another question, as the focus with those games isn't graphics.

Many of the games we see are just direct ports of the PS2 games with welded on Wii controls. It's no wonder people think it's as powerful as a PS2 despite being vastly superior.

with all the lazy developers out there we probably won't see it's full potential until Mario Galaxy which does look quite nice. But as was said it's not about the graphics on the wii. There are some games like Zakk and Wiki and No more heroes that will look as good imo as some ps3/360 games based on their artistic style alone. That said we won't be getting anything like killzone 2. God i want killzone 2.

Yeah, the comparison to the original Xbox's graphics seems as though it could hold out to be the most accurate. Whatever about 'Nintendo's focus' being elsewhere... it's like they're not even trying at the moment.

People seem to forget that the PS2 was the weakest of the last 3 gen machines. If the Wii was similar to a PS2, then that'd mean that Nintendo went backwards graphically from the Gamecube!
It's supposed to be about 1.5 times as capable as the cube was. I'd believe it too, as processors have come on a lot in the last few years. I know Nintendo took an "off the shelf" one from IBM to cut production costs, but that's still going to be plenty better than the ones fitted to the last gen consoles.
