More protection?

    Hi,

I have Norton protection centre on my laptop with the usual anti- virus, firewall, privacy control etc.

Is this sufficient protection or should I be downloading extra programmes ?
I don't want to put on unneccesary or duplicating programmess.
However if there is something I should have I would like to know. If it's free all the better.

    Thanks

It's a good idea to have a few programs to catch spyware. Running just one sometimes won't catch all instances of such nasties. I'd recommend Spybot Search and Destroy [running Teatimer in the background] and then scanning for spyware using LavaSoft AdAware. Both of these programs are free.

    Thanks for that

Without doubt the best protection is good surfing habits.

Just because your AV says it is not infected, it may be.

Patch you system regularly, take backups etc.

Even the well know sites can be compromised and try to infect your systems.

yeah I would get some real-time anti-spyware protection, like TeaTimer/SpywareGuard etc.

Other than that you have enough protection really.

All taken onboard, thanks. I am backing up with Acronis True Image to an external drive.

If your Av is saying you are not infected, and you are - how do you find out?
    The hard way?

Well usually AV's will pick up most things so don't worry.
But the best way to find out if you have infections on your PC are :

HijackThis, a rootkit scanner like GMER, Kaspersky, Deckards System Scanner

What i meant is that you should never trust your AV.

Many times we have got e-mails with unusual attachments with out the AV finding the file infected.

Give it 12 hours and most AV companies will have caught up and updated their signatures.

Same with spyware. There is always a lag between the infection being released and the signitures being updated.

I downloaded Spybot and scanned which threw up a few infected files. However to clean these files spybot say I have to pay bout 30 dollars. Is this the normal procedure with "free" programmes ?

ugh, we are going to have to fix up your PC now since you clearly have infected yourself
spybot say I have to pay bout 30 dollars. Is this the normal procedure with "free" programmes ?
ALWAYS download programs from their official site, it seems you have downloaded some malware pretending to be Spybot.

CLICK HERE to download the HijackThis Installer:
    1. Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
    2. Double-click on HJTInstall.exe to run the program.
    3. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.
    4. Accept the license agreement by clicking the "I Accept" button.
    5. Click on the "Do a system scan and save a log file" button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
    6. Click "Save log" to save the log file and then the log will open in Notepad.
    7. Click on "Edit -> Select All" then click on "Edit -> Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
    8. Come back here to this thread and paste the log in your next reply.
    9. Do NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet! Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Oh no! I googled for it instead of clicking on the earlier post link. The site looks very genuine, but what would I know. I uninstalled it after the money request but too late obviously.

I am not at my home computer at present.I will follow your instructions in the morning.

    Thanks again

spybot say I have to pay bout 30 dollars.
this is very strange since spybot is free, and often malware programs do something like that, however your log is clean.

Could you please PM me the link to the site and maybe a screenshot of spybot trying to get you to pay 30$

Was the name of the program exactly like this "Spybot - Search and Destroy" or was it like "SpywareBot - Search and Destroy" or something like that?

Thanks for that. It actually does say "Search and Destroy - Free. Spyware bot." on the link. When you open it up it says Spybot S&D.

It's the top link in the google bar if you search under Spybot. I have been trying to add an attachment on a PM to you but I can't manage to find the attachment link. Yes, I'm that bad !

    Thanks again:)

Looks like a suspect program i i have the right link.

Below is what Spyware-Net said about it:

    pywareBot

    Description of SpywareBot
SpywareBot is a suspect anti-spyware application that deceptively leverages the Spybot Search and Destroy name, and provides users no End User License Agreement.

    Recommendation for SpywareBot
It is recommended that you remove this software from your computer to secure your system from suspected applications that might threaten system security.
