Vaio wiped/virus??

Hi there. I;ve had my Sony Vaio SZ2xp/c for just over a year now and the strangest thing happened.

First off let me just state that I had full Sophos virus protection on my laptop at the time and it was up-to-date.

Now, one day I opened Internet Explorer on a page I regularly visit. It is not a SPAM page or anything like that, just a regular webpage. Anyway, 60+ blank internet explorers suddenly popped up all at once. i tried closing them but couldnt so once they stopped, I right clicked on the bottom and closed all. Thinking this was odd, i properly shut down the laptop.

When i turned it back on my Sopranos background was still there and I decided to run my anti-virus. At 75% way through I noticed most of my desktop icons had been removed (only remaining were Recycle bin and Internet explorer). I dont know why, but I cancelled the virus scan and rebooted the computer.

it then took ages to log on, probably 120 seconds more than usual and for this laptop thats very slow. The background had returned to the factory setting blue and everything else seemed gone. A message comes up now "Error - unable to load library wxwf.dll. Attempted to load /wxfx.dll Err code: 126". When I click 'ok' it is followed by "Error - Unable to start Desktop Weather Setup Program". FYI the weather program was downloaded from weather.com just to give me daily temp readings. I presume weather.com is legit.

Anyway, now there appears to be no files on the laptop, the internet wireless card cannot be found, even things like caclulator etc. are gone. Its as if the computer has completely been wiped and yet there is no way of properly rebooting it.

Also, there is a Vaio Recovery Tool but whatever has happened to the computer, when I click on it, it states "this only works on Sony Vaio".

I cannot access net, sophos, or anything. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or how I can wipe the computer and start from fresh?? I usually use it for college and since the year is out, I dont mind losing the info that was on it. Just want to get it back to its old self.

    Any comments are hugely appreciated
    Thanks in advance

This is when you attempt to perform the recovery from within Windows? Chances are it deleted one or two files that are required to start it from within windows.
Boot the laptop, tapping the key to start the recovery (F10 usually?) and perform a recovery.
