Phil Laak and Ali Eslami (never heard of him) start their match against the University of Alberta's Polaris limit hold em poker software programme today. It should be interesting. Though having said that forget about Phil Laak playing a supercomputer at limit, I wanna see Jennifer Tilly playing a toaster at no limit!

Kinda related i seen that last week checkers became a solved game.

Only took the computer 18 years of non stop playing !!

Edit : Just noticed its the same team that built the checkers computer that are challenging Laak and Ali Eslami

I'd be more worried about the evolving card playing AI that got made... kinda cool, they set multiple incarnations of the software playing itself, some became rocks, some became really aggressive and the funniest thing of all, at the start the ai played one hand in the first 40, lost, and promptly never played again untill forced.

This is the University of Alberta poker research group. They built poker academy and won best paper at the main worldwide AI conference a couple of times for their poker research. You can read the publications describing their research at their website:

Check out the publications section at the bottom. Some very interestesting stuff there.

seen that alright, i dont think a computer could win against a good poker player. it cannot think for itself, so its just a process of figuring out the weakness.

OK so the Poker Pro's beat the computer 2-1.

What is the rules regarding computer's and online play?

A good spec home PC at chess can beat all but the best human players, so I am assuming that a decent poker program running on one could turn a decent profit.

Does any of this go on?

    Bots.
With computers continually improving, and being able to take stats into account better than a human, soon it will be in the computers favour,

poker is different to chess. actions and reactions cannot be predicted so easily.... but it sounds like your computer would give it a good go!

Using a bot is against the TOS of all the major online poker rooms. If they detect a bot they will freeze the account and seize the funds in that account.
