Poker & Scrabble

    Hi all,

With the debate raging in the US as to whether Poker is a game of skill or luck (and the consequences of the decision in Ireland, tax wise), it struck me that poker has a lot in common with the game of scrabble.

Now, if you have stopped laughing, hear my reasoning. Both games have an element of luck involved in regards to what you start off with (cards or letters) but you have to decide how to best use what you've been given and where to play them.

I don't think there's much of a debate in regards to scrabble being a game of skill but poker is a totally different kettle of fish (pun intended) at the moment.

Edit: Corrected the spelling of scrabBle

If it was like scrabble, I would always win.

judging by the fact that I spelt the name of the game wrong I would loose (as I do in poker) :)

    You would 'loose' eh? :)
Yeah, actually poker is a good bit like scrabble.

A far closer analogy would be Backgammon. It involves strategy which plays towards the balance of probabilities to be successful. Great game btw, if anyone is interested. Its no wonder so many current poker champs were Backgammon players before...

    Really? I didn't know that.

I do know that quite a few Magic the gathering champions became poker champions. Magic is far more difficult to win (although quite easy to learn and very enjoyable to play) than poker and simply the best cardgame in the world IMHO.

The Magic nationals are up soon and my deck isn't ready yet and I had no practice drafting either. Rating plummet commencing..........

I thought magic the gathering was just a nerds cardgame. Kinda like warcraft or whatever you call it though I think that was slightly more than a card game.

Its more difficult to suck out playing scrabble. * "I'm all-in" -pushes s a k j c s a randomly onto board to miraculously form jackass landing on triple letter score for j and triple word score for 100 for the win*
    The world series of scrabble

    Do you pla online? (ISC?)

    Fancy a game sometime?

My handle on ISC is Shiftay.

yes I think poker is quite similar to scrabble, backgammon, bridge, or mtg, all of which (except maybe backgammon) are traditionally thought of as games of skill.

I've never played there, or online for the matter. Wouldn't that be suspect to a lot of hax/cheating?
I'd play if I had net access out of work.
My gf's family all play and they are realllly competitive in it, so I get to play with them.
They even make up games that are like scrabble but you have to do it far faster.

You should check it out. There's a certain code-of-honour type thing (called the fair-play agreement) among the players that they don't use programs for cheating.

You can choose how long you want to play for between 3 minutes (!!!!!!) and 45 mins.

lol, I have a video on my phone of the same sh!te at the rio, it was a bit nuts!

Unfortunatly the video quality on my phone isn't good.

I also have a video of a guy in a wheelchair, who is moving along not using his hands, but my using his feet, he is sitting in the wheelchair, slouched down, using his feet to shuffle himself forward.

    Had to be there. :p

The video quality is quite bad but I think I can make out cardshark202. If he was still playing the 25c machines that must be quite an old video.
