5.1 surrond sound problems

Currently have a 5.1 cinema system, 6 phono leads come out of the sub woofer and into the dvd player ( 5.1 output on the dvd player).

The dvd player has stopped working and has to be replaced. I can no longer get a dvd player with 5.1 output on the back so was looking at getting an av amp and a stanard dvd player.

None of the av amps I have seen have a 5.1 output using the phone leads.
Is it possible to cut off the phone leads and use the bare wire to connect to the amp?

Hope the above makes sense and its not a stupid question.

    Thanks for your help.

Can you post the model of the DVD player you had and the sub that it feeds into ,
The reason for this is that either you already have ( or had ) an amp integrated in the DVD player or the subwoofer.

The DVD player is kaput , so if the amp was in there then you should be able to get an amp that will feed the Sub. If not then the amp was in the Sub and if you get an AV amp then you will be amplifying twice by coming from the AV amp and the going into the amp in the subwoofer.

My DVD has 5.1 out , but its a line level out ( un amplified ) and that goes into an AV amp .

Amplifying twice can be a bad thing , it may inadvertantly pop all your speakers , so you need to check this out.

Also post the ratings ( watts rms ) on the speakers , and I may be able to recommend an amp

    Thank you for your reply.

DVD is a Philips DVD762 and the Speakers & Sub are Philips MMS 306/DVD.

    Speakers are 5 x 10 watts RMS..

OK , the amp is definitely in the speakers on your system , so connecting them up to an AV amp would not be a good idea.

Most av amps are rated way higher than those speakers anyway and would be a bad match and sound terrible to boot.
If you go the AV amp route I would suggest buying new speakers and a DVD player too.

Your cheapest option to get back up and running here is this ,

    http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/d/dvp5150_94/dvp5150_94_pss_aen.pdf

Its a philips DVP5150 , and Ive seen them going online for around €120 , it has the analog multi channel out that you need , and plays everything and its mother , Divx , wmv etc.

Its the cheapest player I could find with Analog multichannel out , hope it helps.
