I havent seen any pictures up yet so I will start the ball rolling. Myself, Paul W, Frank Courtney, Stephen Lynn and organiser Gerard Kenny went up north on Saturday to do a 4 hour studio shoot in http://www.imagerystudio.t83.net/ organised with three models. Turned out to be an excellent day and a great introduction to studio shooting with (I think) a lot being learnt by everyone involved. The studio had a main area set up with 2 large Bowens softboxes and 2 flash with umbrella all fired off your own flash so no wires.

I must say, it was a great shoot. I learned a lot, and made loads of mistakes too. Some actually worked (as mistakes). The models were great. Fun to work with, professional too, but overall a good laugh and easy to photograph.

Here's a sample of mine (many more on FlickR)

They all look great! I love the cheeky grin one Paul :)

Wouldn't mind trying some studio work when I'm a bit more confident.

Actually, I'd be very keen for another studio shoot. Maybe 4 photographers and 2 models? More than that can be a little complex, especially considering those flash.

Sinead - it was my very first time in a studio and it was great. Once you get to grips with the equipment it was fine. The girls were really great. They know what to do, and just a little guidance from the photographer goes a long way.

So, if anyone is interested, I'd be up for it again.

Oh, and one more photo --

hehe!! Love that last one Paul ;) What a happy expression! (/wonders why :D)

I found it mentally very tiring but also it got you thinking a lot about where you wanted the light. I think when I do it again I will move the lights around a lot more to get different effects. What is it about seeing pictures of yourself that reinforces your decision to be behind the camera!! :)

    Amy gets my vote!

Other then that, i don't really like photography!

Just a few quick ones - still have loads to get through :

    175873522-L.jpg

    175875790-L.jpg

Incidentally, found quite a few were underexposed by 1 to 1.5 stops. The flashmeter was right after all ! Think I was misinterpreting the histogram on my camera (should have filled the frame with a face, rather than including the background as well).

Nice shots all. Would love to try studio photography myself out some day. I'd have to purchase a flash too before I tried it out and also purchase some confidence! Can you buy that on the internet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,272 ✭✭✭✭Paulw

The studio flash/lights were enough. In reality we didn't use our own flash much at all.

As for confidence ... well ... all you have to do is photograph the subject. You do that all the time. The difference in the studio is that you just photograph the model, and advise her how you'd like to photograph her.

Great photos Frank, love the hair one.

I think Al in Kea has it in stock Louise :)

I wouldn't know where to start with metering for lights.

That first one is really lovely Cameraman!

Yeah great shots Cameraman!! 3rd one (hair) is very well captured.

Metering for the lights was trial and error, most of the time it was around 1/200th and f7-10.

Some great shots there & good to hear people enjoyed it too.

Cameraman's first photo is really nice, but plenty of great shots there.

It was a great day. I'm actually surprised that I found so many of mine that I actually liked and enjoyed processing.

If people are interested, I'd be keen to go again, maybe with different models.

    Hi Folks,

Firstly, I'm completely new to both studio photography and model photography. It was a bit strange for me. I'm used to shooting gigs and nature - things that you can't ask to stop pose for you. Twas all a bit strange.
And to be honest after taking these photos - I'm thinking "What the hell am I going to do with these?"
All in all though, it was a good experience, and thoroughly enjoyed meeting up with the lads, even if I was, ahem, fashionably late!

I've very quickly gone through a few there. First time, be nice.
The rest of the few that I've done can be found here.

Oriel numbers 2 and 4 would be my favs of your set.

Can I ask what a day like that would cost and if any instruction was included?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,265 ✭✭✭✭Borderfox

2 & 4 are excellent, Nilhg the day cost €90 which was for four hours and three models. No instruction was included but the girls knew what sort of shots we were looking for :) and were a great help on the day.

Oriel, I think you've more photos of the photographers than the models. :p

It was my first studio work too. Initially it was very daunting - lights, women I didn't know, outfits, props etc. But once we started, I was surprised how easy it was. Ok, it wasn't that easy, considering how many images I had to delete due to under-exposure, over-exposure and a few that were out of focus.

The girls made it fun. They were so relaxed and easy going. They certainly helped, and their poses and suggestions added to it all.

That one day has given me loads of new ideas, especially with how to use the lights. I want to go back and try more things now. I'd even consider trying a model shoot outdoors, just to compare.

For what we got on the day, it was cheap enough. The studio is Stg £15 per hour, and then just add the models on top (anything from £15 per hour up). To get some lessons in studio work, the guy who runs the place does some tutorials, and I'm sure he would make himself available for a small session.

Check out their website for more details. http://www.imagerystudio.t83.net/
