Just a quick heads up to say that FX are showing 'The Wire' from the beginning, Season 1 starting tomorrow (23rd) at 10 pm.

Might be useful info for those of us with withdrawal symptoms from Tony and Co., this is supposed to be an excellent show (I have deliberately being waiting for an opportunity to see it from the start).

Its probably the best shown on tv. Ever!

It takes a while to get into it. Watch the full season and then decide if you like it or not.

Dont expect a "hollywood" ending either

Deadly, I was meaning to start getting into this now that the Sopranos has finished. I hadn't even realised this was shown on TV over here so now I can watch it nice and legally too. Great news.

Brilliant stuff. I hadn't seen an episode before, but heard great reviews about it. You'd know straight off it was a HBO jobbie as the language was more real to life than other shows. Took a while before I could get over the language barrier though! Seriously, thoroughly enjoyed it and shall be watching the rest of the series now.

The great thing is it only gets better from here. A lot better.

hardly. season 1 and 3 are great. 2 isn't that good, and the whole kids thing in season 4 is pretty cringeworthy and pointless. the barksdales make the show worthwhile.

every season has been brilliant in it's own right

What was cringeworthy about it and pointless? Does a show that's portraying the lives of people have to have a point - does your life? In actual fact it does have a point as well? I know mine doesn't, that it's a series of events strung together over time and I think 'The Wire' was focusing on these kids at a significant point in their life and letting us understand them:
showing the different paths of kids, the paths their choices can lead to, the foreshadowing of how what they do now will make them the people they become, how good doesn't always triumph but sometimes it can in small ways, that redemption is possible, that education can work and thinking outside the box can provide results, just as Colvin did with 'New Hamesterdam' in the third season, that... I could go on...

As to being cringeworthy? Not at all:
acting by the kids was great, there was a good spectrum of distinct personalities within their group, it was touching and heart breaking to see where they go, and was a microcosm of many of the people we've met in the adult group
    .

I liked series 2 and thought it was on par with the other series. I liked the dock workers stories and was delighted to see Vondas return at the end of series 4.

Season 4 was probably the best season IMO and the kids were amazing actors for people you had never heard of.

What an awfully thought out piece and it's an article like that that puts me off reading "The Guardian". Thankfully, her idiocy is exposed in the many comments below it.

I think that is more a blog post than anything. The Guardian has been a massive fan of The Wire from day one. Just do a search on their site and it will bring up many articles. They are currently streaming the very first episode on their site.

The Guardian website is a great resource and they have some of the best writers around.

Currently watching Season 1 after buying the box set! Typical. First impressions? Slow starting few epsiodes building the characters but halfway through now and really enjoying it. Has supplemented the hole in my life that the Sopranos has left!

funny seeing the references to Sopranos, as I missed the first few years it passed me by, I now have all the seasons and started watching last week, someone just gave me the 4 seasons of the wire too, so it looks like I'm okay for a while, I like the entire series route, nearly finished Alias and have the west wing waiting in totality also, isn't tv great compared to years ago, sky+, rips and boxsets and away you go
