LARPs in Ireland?

    Hello,

Back home in Russia, I have been participating in LARPs since 1994. Played about 20-30 roles in my life. One-day,s everal-day, in homes and in forests... Played an Irishman several times too - got the looks for that :) Also was one of the Game Masters a couple of times, developed the game concept once, and another time went as a non-playing photographer.

Now I'm in Limerick, and I cant' find any trace of a LARP community. Although perhaps I've been looking in the wrong place.

Are there any LARPs in Ireland, and where could I find them and join? I'd prefer outdoors and several days, but I'm flexible.

There isn't the outdoor weekend larping in this country the closest you will get to it is re enactment groups.

    There is http://www.camarilla.ie

The Larp Ireland website seems to be defunct currently.

But Maybe someone in the IGA maybe able to point you in the right direction,

It seems that most of those who are in to the imersive larp travel to the UK
and take part in the Lorien Trust events.

There maybe more people able to help if you try the irish gaming mailing list which can be found on yahoo. igaming@yahoogroups.com

Yup, Thaedydal's right, there is none of the "rubber-sword" style of LARPing in Ireland - insurance and suitable sites have just proven too difficult or expensive to get - so any of us here who are into that sort of thing are involved with LARPing in the UK.

The organisation most of us are involved in is the Lorien Trust, as pointed out. They hold 4 main events every year, between the end of May and the end of August, but there are numerous smaller "sanctioned" events every year. Probably one most weekends, if you have the time and money ;)

In the UK though there are a huge number of LARP systems, the LT just happens to be the biggest, whcih for some is a disadvantage. It's very much a Festival system, which isn't everyone's cup of tea.

Another very popular system is Maelstrom, run by Profound Decisions (www.profounddecisions.co.uk). I have a *lot* of friends involved in this one, and they love it. It's very immersive, with a high focus of good-quality costume, and a primary focus on player-driven storylines rather than Plot Team-derived plot.

Within Ireland the Camarilla is really the only long-term style of LARP going on, although every gaming convention will usually run at least a couple of con-based 3-hour pot-boiler-style games.

As for those of us needing our rubber-sword fix, there's usually weapon practice most Sundays in St Anne's Park in Raheny. The numbers attending vary according to whim and weather, and I'm no longer sure of who turns up and who the main organising force is sicne I haven't been able to go in ages, but there'll nearly always be at least a few there even just to spar with one another, if nothing better is organised. Since most of us go to LT events, we train using the LT weapons system

It generally runs from about 2pm - 6pm. Directions to the spot in the park we practice at though are unfortunately rather difficult to describe verbally though :(

Edited to add: Ah, sorry, failed to read your post properly. All the above is Dublin-based. I don't know of anyone involved in LARPing down Limerick way. The closest I would be aware of would be University College Cork's Medieval and Renaissance Society, which are more of a re-enactment/living history type of thing. However gaming societies in either UL or UCC would probably be your best bet for knowing what might be going on in your area. :/

I see this user has since been banned, but just in case:

Champions of Lough Devnaree is not a LARP, it's a medieval re-creation event within the SCA. Much medieval, no role-playing.

Yeah, they keep getting banned, re-registering, and linking to SCA stuff. It's quite annoying, especially since they're also not responding to "How much LARP is actually involved" type questions.

I'm reasonably sure they're not actually in the SCA (or even involved peripherally), since they're getting rather the wrong end of the stick about it. That and the SCA in Ireland just isn't that big, so I know pretty much everyone. If I can get in touch, I'll apply a clue-by-four.
