Looking for opinions.......... getting some ground works done on my house costing 6000 euro. Was told the work will only take a couple of days. He wants a cheque for it before he starts work - is this a common request?

you would be crazy to pay him the entire amount upfront.

Pay feck all until the work is done. Bar maybe a small retainer. 500 euro?

it's not common at all. Never pay the full amount up front. Maybe for the materials costs but labor should not be paid until the job is complete. Some tradesmen have paid for all materials themselves and then find it hard to get paid for the job they did. Maybe you have a guy that happened to and is just trying not to let it happen again. Try and find someone else he has done work for and ask them how they payed him.
