    Hi,

Is it possible to use a digital camera as a webcam? I have a sony cybershot w30 and have been trying unsuccessfully to use it as a webcam. I've heard its possible yet internet searching yas yielded nothing helpful.

    Thanks

A quick internet search shows up the following video tutorial from Sony , apparantly its easy enough , but it wont work with the camera on battery power , it must be plugged in via the charger.

    http://esupport.sony.com/perl/tutorial-display.pl?tut_id=380&mdl=DSCS80

So , dig out your video cable , connect it to your camera and your pc , ( you need a video in port on your computer somewhere , if you dont have one your out of luck. )
Put the camera in movie mode , start the webcam app of your choice ( skype , yahoo or whatever ) and your done !

you can pick up cheap video capture USB devices in PC World etc that would allow you to plug in your Sony camera as use it as a webcam. Of course you may well get a new webcam for the same money.

Thanks Mathias that link was helpful. I have connected my camera to the pc using the video cable. Skype however does not recognise the camera, I was wondering are there any free to download generic webcam software or programs that will allow me to set up my camera as a webcam?

Bstatic, when you connect your camera to the computer and turn on the power does the camera give you the option (on its LCD) of choosing between a webcam or ordinary camera?

I have a Fujifilm and a Medion camera, and both, once connected via USB to the computer and powered on ask you whether you want to use it as a webcam. You'd probably need to download the drivers for that particular camera in order to be able to use it as a webcam, have you tried the Sony website?

They're finiky enough though I find, even a Logitec webcam I got would only work when it wanted to :p ...webcams and scanners........pain in the ass!
