I have a spare Toshiba Satellite M35-S456 with 512 in two slots (256 + 256) that I plan to give my flatmate when it gets back from repair. If I want to upgrade her memory to above one gig, can I just replace one of the 256 with a 1-gig (256 + 1012), or do I have to replace both 256's with 512's (512 + 512)? In other words, do the memory cards have to be a balanced pair?

No, they don't, you can mix whatever you like, provided your laptop supports modules that big. Some older ones only support 512mb maximum size, so you'd want to check that out first.

Crucials memory finder shows that the toshiba satellite M35 series takes up to 2048MB or 2 gigs , so you can fit a maximum of 1GB into each slot.

    It takes DDR SO-Dimm modules
