Moving from UK: new bike, insurance, VRT?

I'm moving over to Ireland next month. I haven't owned a bike for a good few months, but am planning to get a new one before leaving. Ireland prices are too crazy. No considering that I'm going to be over for about a year, with a few visits back to the UK, I can't really call myself permanently resident, and thus might well keep my UK plates. I'm wondering how this works with insurance, since I presume you can only insure Irish registered bikes in Ireland? Any ideas.

If I do decide to switch to the Irish plates, what's the amount I'd pay for a brand new Kwak Z750, or a Suzuki SV650S?

    Thanks all.

Insurance company don't give two hoots about such things. There's no MOT on bikes here either FWIW.

My advice, leave it on UK plates and if you can, insure it there too. Insurance is your HUGE cost here.

Cheers. The only company I've found here that covers unlimited trips to Europe is eCar/eBike. On the pay as you go policy, there's no specification of the length of european cover. Is there another method that people have tried.

Alternatively, is there an Irish company that covers UK reg bikes? I'd really like it to be insured against theft since that's prob the most likely disaster.

I'm with Carole Nash. The "good" thing is that there's only 3 (soon to be 5 though) bike insurers here so it won't take long to evaluate your options! I believe you'll have no touble insuring a UK plated bike with any of the three tbh. They don't bat an eyelid when you give them a UK reg at CN.

Customs are very interested in foreign registered vehicles, so interested that they might want to keep it for themselves. Insurance with Quinn Direct is okay and others is okay with a full no claims.

I think if the bike is insured in England and taxed, as well as you having a English license, then there is nothing that can be done to you for not VRTing the bike. As it is not a imported bike. But one that will be returning to England soon. IE: You are not staying in Ireland for good.

Oh and I drove around on a English reg for over a month. Got stopped once for Over taking on a solid line. Nothing was said but "oh get that declared as soon as you can"

Aon never said a word to me.

My UK insurance is with BMW, which is effectively Devitt. I have unlimited european cover, though it only works for visits of up to 3 months at a time.

    Might be worth trying devitts.

    Thanks all...

Not sure about taking out UK insurance if only due to the visit length restrictions, and theft cover at home (since the postcode will obviously be wrong).

Suppose I could just pop up to belfast once every three months. ;)
