So i got my R85 on Tuesday and i was flicking through the manual today and uh oh, it seems it has been upgraded since the Arnies Airsoft review. It shoots at ~360fps... And there i was with the hopes of using this at an airsoft site.

So i guess this can act as a word of warning to others, the R85 is over the legal limit.

I would chrono it to be sure ... you never know, you might have lucked out and picked up one that is falling short of its manufacturers claims.

But no manufacturer would ever make claims they couldnt back up

the fps should drop after a while shouldnt it ? or downgrade it.
and would they be that strict over a few extra fps?

or just use a half charged battry when its getting chronode tehee!

    Uh-huh.

Downgrade it if at all possible, ask around the other forumitesbecause many of them are quite handy when it comes to Springs (points at Fiachdubh)

Fletch, we are unbelieveably anal about the 1 joule limit - the implications of a device being used above that threshold vis a vie the law and the standpoint Airsoft is trying to take in Ireland right now are numerous and discussed, at length, else where.

... and for that matter when did it become alright to encourage "cheating" ... half battery my Aunt fanny.

If you are sure it's firing 360 fps you can retract the spring and leave it retracted overnight. Just lightly pull the trigger and listen to the piston draw back, release the trigger before the piston shoots forward, may take a few tries. The piston is now in the back position and the spring under tension. Leaving it like that overnight should drop the fps by 20-30 at least, unless ARMY have used a very high quality spring which I doubt.

Of course the AEG will have to be chrone'd after to make sure it's dropped enough. The other way is to put at least 6000 rounds through it but you'll be putting a lot of wear on your mechbox that way. Final way is to replace the spring but that's obvious :p

*DISCLAIMER* I take no responsibility for any unforeseen effects or damage using this method.

several of the JG g36´s fire at 350fps-ish out of the box, but once a few thousand rounds have been fired through them, they bed down to legal limit, but before you do anything, i´d chrono it and find out if it is indeed above 328 already, and report back so people know whether or not to go ahead and buy anymore.

Thanks for the warning BOX. As people are saying, I wouldn't be sure of that until it's chronoed.

Some people seem to be missing the obvious point that if you import a gun to "bed it down" to under 1 joule, you're still importing an unlicensed firearm.

Don't do it. Get it reduced in power before hand.

Anyway, that's enough +1 joule talk. If you want to continue it take it to the shooting forum.
