I just set up a small home network with a lynksys wireless n router (not connected to the internet yet). I have wirless adapter installed on the two home pcs also linksys wireless n adapters.

Its using dhcp and the whole install process was smooth. I can ping the router from each pc but cannot ping a pc from the other one. The linksys software is running the adapater rather than xp doing it.

any suggestions why I cant see the other pc from my own

Can the other pc's on the network ping the pc in question, what ip range are they using?

no neither of the two pcs can ping each other. they will only get a response from the router. the routers ip is 198.168.1.1 and the range its using is 100 to 150. One pc was .100 and the other was .101

All the other settings are the defaults theres no houses nearby so the router is not using any security like WEP.

Is ICMP traffic allowed on your network?
a lot of networks have this switched off to avoid unnecessary traffic?

Might even be firewalls on the computers in question.

    Turn them off first.

Make sure they have the same subnet mask.

Cant say for sure about the icmp Id have to check that when I get home but im pretty sure the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0 on both machines. Does the icmp only affect the pinging or would it prevent pcs seeing other pcs shared folders.

Does it make a difference if the lynksys software is handling the adapters rather than xp itself. the way it is now i use the lynksys monitor to connect to the wireless network and such rather than going to xps show wireless networks (it wont list them anyway cause the adapters being controlled by the lynksys software). I can change this so that windows controls the adapter if necessary by starting the wireless zero service.

All you should have to do is plug cat5 cable from each pc into linksys router and your bb into the uplink port (if it has one, if not carry on). And assign a dynamic address on each pc. The windows firewall shouldn't effect comms between each pc. Try disabling the wireless to see if it makes any difference.

The Windows Firewall will stop the other computers from responding to a ping if set to do so.

In Windows file and printer sharing is not set up, then i think the firewall will default to not responding to pings.

First port of call should be to turn off the firewall of the machine you are trying to ping to.

i turned on the icmp traffic an both pcs. the firewalls are on but i think theres an exception created for file and print sharing. still no ping. i dont really need the firewalls anyway do i would nt the routers firewall give enough protection.

Ill try plugging them into the router with cables rather than wireless to see if they can ping that way.

The router firewall gives you good inbound protection but does not stop outgoing traffic.

IE If you get infected with some spyware, it will not stop it phoning home. A firewall on your PC might. That said i don't use the firewall on my computers and a good anti-virus and good surfing habits should be ok.

Are the computers on the same workgroup. Can you browse them?

yeah same workgroup, mshome as the default and file sharings enabled on at least one of the pcs with an exception in the firewall for it. strange one this maybe ill try the linksys forums.
