hi mysef and my boyfriend will be in thailand for 2weeks at the end of august and we're not sure what to do once we get there and what beaches to head for? we've been travelling for the last few months in oz and new zealand so funds will be low and we also want to stay someplace sunny and relaxing.....not too fussed about partying every night!

any suggestions would be great :) .....we need to start booking flights and accomodation!!

    Thanks

If you make it to Phuket island (which i found lovelty in placves, but very touristy), i'd recommned going for a day's sailing out in the Phang Nga Bay area with captain mark on his little sail boat. You can contact him at www.phuketsailtours.com
My wife and i did that recently onour way home from oz and it was a great day.

I've been to thailand twice and visited bangkok, chiang mai, phuket, phi phi, railay (krabi) koh samui, and very brief visits to koh lanta, koh phangan and koh tao.

My highlights were doing a two-day trek in chiang mai and the few days we spent at railay.
The trek is great fun but if you are looking to laze about it might be too much effort. most of it was easy, just quite steep at the top. you do get to swim in rivers and ride elephants and that kind of thing.

Railay is a really beautiful beach, its not huge but it has massive rock outcrops at each end. There are two beaches, one is the nice beach and the other, about 3 mins walk away is not nice but has all the bars (about six!).

I would avoid phuket, far too commercial and nothing only hookers everywhere you look, though the beach is nice.

Loved phi phi the first time i was there and hated it the second time. it wasnt as much fun,the bars closed early on the beach, and it just seemed to have lost its soul. we went in summer 2005 and they were so grateful to have tourists back after the tsunami, they were really friendly and chatting, last year they seemed less friendly and from what i could see, the memorial garden for the tsunami victims seemed to have been built over, though i could be mistaken.

Another thing to watch out for is the weather. it wil most likely be cloudy in phi phi, koh lanta, and phuket in August though you could be lucky.

Koh samui (also commercialised but beautiful beach) koh phangan and koh tao is your best bet for decent weather at that time.

    Hope this helps.
