If you give model numbers it might be easier to help.

Probably the lowest common denominator is a s-video cable, if both your laptop and TV have this it will work.

Best thing to do is get the model numbers and download the specs from the manufacturers website and then you check what inputs/exports they have.

    i.e. I have a Philips HD TV also 37PF9986 and a HP Laptop ZV6179
The TV has a DVI and S-Video (inputs)
The Laptop has a VGA and S-Video (outputs>

Thus you use the lowest common denominator, also given that S-Video cables are really cheap I would recommend this route.
I could also get a VGA-DVI adapter and cable and that would work but more fuss that what I wanted.

Probably wrong forum to ask this question, but I'll try and answer.

First of all you need to find out what sort of connections are on your TV and what are on your laptop?

Best case scenario, your TV has a HDMI input port (or DVI port) and your laptop has DVI out.

If you have this, then it is easy to get a DVI to HDMI cable (you will also need to get a separate audio cable as DVI doesn't carry sound).

Alternatively your laptop might have s-video out and the TV should have it in.
