Is there any way you can turn this off and use the memory yourself...?I don't use anytime so I would rather use the hard drive space for what I want rather than have it wasted on Anytime.

I don't really need it as it does not often go below 50%,but if I could turn it off it could come in handy when going away on holiday's etc.

if you go to services and hit 6 you can turn it off, won't give any extra space but at least it will be turned off and save your machine taping stuff you'll never watch

You could always have an Anytime simulator if you miss it. Just pick programs at random from the EPG and get it to record them - make sure that at least half of them are from channels that you don't subscribe to.

Switching it off should also help to preserve the HDD, which is the most likely part to go.

    :D

    that's very good!!

As an aside, it doesn't use your portion of the HD, so no wasted space, but it is a useless service, if it monitored what you normally watch and then download things it thinks you'd like (like a tivo) that would be good.

Interestingly enough , it seems to do just that , Ive been using it , and as I watch stuff it dissappears to be replaced by similar programming !

Now Im not sure or course , because I dont have anyone to compare listings with , Does anyone know if everyone gets the same content ? The programs are definitely shuffled as you watch them , I know that much.

I think a content deal with HBO or someone should be made and that put on the Anytime portion on the HDD. As it is it is useless.

Slightly swaying away from topic here but if I have a couple of movies saved on sky+ and I decide to downgrade from the movies package, will i still be able to view my recorded movies.

    no.
The viewing card is used to decrypt the movie which is recorded as is, (with an extra encryption which is on all, even FTA recordings). You need what ever package would be needed for the live viewing.

If your dish is disconnected, after a day or two (or whatever) you can't watch ANY recordings!

Thanks for that watty. Time to back up those few movies so!

Not entrely true. A hard drive in constant use is actually less likely to fail than one only used occasionally. Although you are right in saying that it is the most likely part to fail (same as with a PC).

I know it sounds odd, but Google proved this from stats they got back from their 1,000s of standard PCs they have in their server farms.

I agree with you, but the normal user doesn't leave their box on all the time, so it's not recording all the time (and Sky have the auto power off feature now). This means that the drive is constantly spinning up and down. Also it's not recording all the time when it's doing the anytime. It can being going on and off.

So most normal users (don't know if any of them read these forums) don't have their hard drive in constant use and their hard drive would probably fair better with anytime off.

One thing that I have noticed which is a plus is the latest film premier on Sky "Children Of Men" is getting its first showing this Saturday but has been available on Sky Active for the last few days.
