I know we had a thread on this ages ago, anyway .....

I always use sleep on my imac, i guess i use sleep too much. In fact i use it so much i reckon i am better putting a screen saver on it. Well i use the apple built in water ripple to kick in after a few minutes and i have the computer set to go asleep after 15 minutes of no use. I was wondering does anyone know where i can get the fish tank screen saver? , i know i have to buy it, i don't mind. I saw it somewhere before, but can't remember ......

By the way if i use the screen saver will it be ok if it were left like this all night long.

earlier today i went to put my computer to sleep and it refused to sleep (when i went to the little blue apple.)
It went to sleep after 15 minutes of no use, all by itself, that's when it struck me to get a good screen saver.

Is this the screensaver you mean? It hasn't been updated in a while so I'm not sure how well it works anymore.

Anyway unless you have your imac downloading or something during the night then I think sleep is the better option as it saves electricity. I don't use a screensaver at home, there's no need. I have the display set to switch off after 20 mins and I manually put my imac to sleep at night. There's nothing wrong with using sleep a lot. Apple intend you use it instead of shutting down, that's why the power button is at the back of the imac.

yeah thats the one professor, but after reading what you posted about it i went to apple.com and found a fish tank screen saver they suggest from a crowd called useless creations. I will give the trial version a go.

I changed my settings --- screen saver kick in 11 minutes
sleep mode to kick in 1 hour and 10 minutes
i just reckoned i was putting it to sleep on and off to much.

what amount of power is used in sleep mode? Is it simliar to putting your tv on standby? Im just trying to be environmently aware!

Your imac uses about 3/4 watts when asleep. Depends on the tv but afaik most use up to about 5 watts on standby, I'm not too sure though. So yeah it's similar.

Electrical items that are plugged in will use a couple watts anyway even when off so there isn't much difference between shutdown and sleep.

let me guess you like clean air like these guys http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfS-Pgh02wY

Nah, i just use sleep cause apple & the professor tell us to use it. Thats good enough for me.

Although one wonders about global warming now --- look at the bad summer we have ---- I have a flu right now, first time in my life to get a flu in summer ( although i am just after going 2 years without a flu / cold) ---- Maybe i could see myself plugging everything else out because of global warming, but not my imac.

In that case, don't use a screen saver, put the display to sleep, and put the mac to sleep after a certain time.

Screen savers were primarily to prevent burn-in on Cathode Ray Tubes (big bulky displays) and older dstn type LCD panels ( the original colour LCD where the mouse pointer was impossible to find ?? ). Nowadays they have no other use than to look nice and provide eye candy for the owner.

Move forward a while and now think of Sleep as the 'screen saver' for your TFT LCD screen. Why ? Simple, while the LCD panel itself has a very long life the fluorescent tube, that provides the back light so you can see the image, does not. As they age they shift in colour temperature and their output decreases meaning you will need to replace the whole display. Have a look at a fluorescent tube in the lights where you work, notice how the ends can go black - this will eventually happen to the one in you LCD panel.

Therefore my advice to anyone with an LCD other than the new LED ones should turn the display off saving it and preserving it's original characteristics.

Agreed. I don't like screensavers really, but I do happen to have a very nice one, so I have it set that it comes on for 15 secs or so but then my sleep kicks in after my x time set for inactivity. So i get a few seconds of nice impressionist art and then sleepy-time! Best of both worlds ;)
