    Guys,
    I have a laptop I bought around 2000/2001 not 100% sure.
It was at the time top spec and I have upgraded it since.

Now what I do is development at home (VB.NET, ASP.NET, SQL SERVER 2005) for learning purposes mainly.
    Play games on it.
    The spec is:
    Inspiron 8200 Laptop
    Mobile Pentium®4 Processor,1.8 GHz,
    15.0 SXGA+,
    1GB RAM,
    32MB DDR nVidia® GeForce4™ 440 Go,
    120GB Ultra ATA Hard Drive,
    CD Writer

I don't/can't spend a bomb, maybe 700 euro max, I think if I put mine in buyandsell I cud get 400+ for it.

I spotted a thread there in Bargain Alerts about a laptop:
    AMD Sempron Mobile Technology 3500+
Windows Vista Home & Works 8.0
    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA
    Dell Wireless 1390 802.11b/g Mini-Card
    1024MB RAM
    120GB Hard Drive
ATI Radeon Xpress 1150 Video Card
    8X DVD +/- RW Drive
    4 Cell Lithium-ion Battery
    65W AC Adapter
    56.6k V92 Internal Modem
Internal QWERTY Keyboard - €458.59 delivered

My question is, is it worth my while upgrade to a laptop like that at all or do I need to pick one of the processors below to notice a massive difference?

    AMD® Athlon™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TK53 [add € 48.40 or €2/month1]

    AMD® Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL56 [add € 157.30 or €6/month1]
Dual-Core processors are ideal for digital content creation and a high-quality digital entertainment experience:

    AMD® Turion™ 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL60 [add € 266.20 or €10/month1]

Well ditch the sempron that's for sure. On the turion front the naming convention is that the letter after the T is to do with power consumption. The higher the letter the less power it consumes. So in this case the TL would be the better one to go with.

The number relates to the speed of the processor. The higher this number the more performance you get. In the case of these processors the

    TK 53 - 1.7Ghz
    TL 56 - 1.8Ghz
    TL 60 - 2.0Ghz

I can't finf a performance comparison guide between the three so you can see if it's worth the cost to get one processor over another but maybe someone else can.

thanks for that, but do you think that there is a massive different between the speed of the laptop I have and the TL 56 - 1.8Ghz?

I have lost track of processors over the years!!!

Athlon 64's versus a Pentium 4 processor of equal processor speed. The Athlon would destroy it performance wise. Whether this equates to the mobile arena is another story but I would say so especially given the five year gap. I'm positive that the turion would use less power than the pentium 4 so giving you extra battery life.

So the main benefit you think wud be battery life? That wud not make much difference to be honest as the laptop has been plugged in for most of its life!!!!

    Thanks for ur help though

No no no. What I was saying is that in the desktop market if a pentium 4 and an Athlon 64 with the same clock speed were benchmarked the Athlon would kick it's ass by a mile. Therefore the Athlon would be a lot better. Now I don't know about the mobile processors but I would say it would be the same. That a turion compared against an a pentium with an equivalent clock speed, the turion would kick it's ass as well but I don't know this for sure but I would be willing to bet on it. I also seriously doubt that a 5 year old processor could outperform a new one. So in my opinion the turion would be a lot better performance wise than your current processor.

Ah, thanks lad, I predict an Almighty cushion in the back of the head if I don't shut up soon!! ;)

I wouldn't have a clue. You could try posting the specs here and see what they say.
