Bass Amps - 1x15 or 4x10

    Hi there,

I'm in the market for a new bass amp. I currently use an old Laney 100W 1x15 Combo, it's got DI and has done me ok as a practice / gigging amp.

Now that I'm looking to buy a new one, I've decided to go with a Head / Cabinet ( as they're easier to carry separately and in the long run I can upgrade one or the other if I ever need to ). I'm probably looking at a 300W Head ( maybe an Ashdown MAG, thought that's not in stone yet ) so all I need to do is choose the size / type of cabinet.

I've got my eye on a 4x10 cabinet ( Ashdown MAG again ), but I've seen a lot of people use these with a 1x15 as well. So I guess my question is which is better, 4x10 or 1x15? I think I understand the logic behind the two ( 1x15 should give better low end but not as good high end as a 4x10 ) but maybe I'm wrong? Is the 4x10 not good enough for low end that you need to use a 1x15 too? Is the 1x15 not good enough for the high end that you need to use a 4x10 too?

Considering that I'm going from a 100W 1x15 that's nearly 18 years old, I'm guessing any new amp is gonna sound better, but if I went with a 4x10 would I be disappointed that the low end isn't there? I don't really have the money ( or strength or car space ) for both a 1x15 and a 4x10...

    Your thoughts please...

    J.

ppl will tell you there's not a lot of low end out of a 4x10 but i get all the low end i want out of my ashdown abm.

was considering getting a 1x15 aswell initially but i really didnt need it.

    Hi Judas...

So, you're more than happy with 'just' a 4x10 then? I reckon I will be too, but I thought I'd look for people's opinions before giving over my cash! I'm not a serious player, so I don't want to be spending too much money, but I do like the idea of having some decent 300w range kit...

i am indeed. i have a 300w abm head and 4x10 cab. volume wise its more than adequate and have never been lacking in the low end department.if youre playing a 5 string a 1x15 might be worth looking into aswell however.

Nope, I'm sticking with 4 strings, so 4x10 should be fine for me. Like I said, it'll be better than what I currently have anyhow! Thanks for your advice...

I think I have the best of both worlds.....a 1x15 with a tweeter in it (which you can turn off if you like).

But from what I've heard, multiple 10" speakers can produce some outstanding bass, as long as the cabinet/baffling is designed correctly.
In fact, Phil Jones bass cabs are supposed to be monstrous, and only use a large amount of 5" drivers!
