    Tesco and smyths for 13e
Eason are doing full price but with a free tshirt, two free books and some other crap at their midnight opening

9 pound is over 13e and you would still have to pay packaging. I would say Tesco is the best.

according to the paper yesterday, Tesco is full price, Easons and waterstones are doing about half price if you preorder and a few other shops are doing fairly good offers, check out Reads I'm pretty sure it's only 12.99

    http://www.buy4now.ie/eason/ says it's 13.41

Yeah heard it on newstalk this morning. I think easons are €13.49 (but I heard rumour of first few thousand for a fiver), and Reids are €12.99.

RRP is €26, so shop around!

Play are selling it for e15.49 as far as i know with delivery!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,623 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

Most people won't want to wait 10 days to read it, so I think high street shops are the best bet for this one!

Yahoo news says asda is selling it for £5 which is about 7 euro.

As posted before easons selling first 2000 copies at a fiver

Tesco/Dunnes usually tend to be cheaper than actual bookshops

for the sake of a few euro, support your local book shop (who i'm sure will also be doing some special offers) and go buy it there!

The first 200 in Reads are free, I've heard.
I'm getting mine in Hughes and Hughes 'cause they've a price promise!

brian rbk, my local bookshop went bust recently! oh, the irony....

various newspaper reports that no bookstores are going to make any money out of this book and also that some small bookstores were planning to buy their stock in Tesco.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,446 ✭✭✭bugler

When I worked for a bookstore a few years back, I heard legal action (by some bookselling body) was being taken against Reads for selling titles below RRP. Was there any truth in this? And under what conditions is it allowable/prohibited to sell under RRP?

For those interested the rationale as I heard it was that Reads were not a bookseller as such, but relied on the sales of stationery, magazines and other supplies to get by. Therefore they did not seek to make a profit out of selling books, but by hoping to drag in other business for their primary products by luring customers into the shop to buy said cheap books.

Sorry for going OT - not sure if this merited another thread :)

Tescos haven't released their price yet and won't until later tonight, they're keeping an eye on what everyone else is doing first so I don't know where the paper got the idea they're selling it full price or where any other price came from for that matter.

The heavily-advertised "loss leaders" are a very commonly used practice... think about the HMV sales - their ads show popular DVD's for a fiver, so Joe Public goes in to pick up his bargain, and drops another €20 or €30 on products he sees while he's wandering around.

So, Tesco might be selling it the cheapest, but also count on each customer also buying snacky treats/coffee/smokes at midnight to get them through the novel.

Also, Read's was bought by Eason's recently (well, a few years ago), so I reckon the two shops will have the same price. Also, possibly because Eason/Read's would be buying the book in such huge quantities, they could possibly have worked out a discounted price with the publishers. I don't know the ins and outs of the whole thing, obviously!

Sorry for going soooooo off topic! :o

Won't necessarily have the same price. Two different brands, two different marketing strategies - helps them to cater for the budget-conscious in 1 shop, and less budget-conscious in the other!

Yep. I was at Artaine castle last night at about 12.20 to get a book for the sister and there was a small bookshop just inside the door which was empty while there was 200 or so queueing to get their books from Tesco.
Felt sorry for the woman in the small bokshop, but then remembered she'll make her money from the school book lists next month !

We queued last night outside our local bookstore and paid €17.99 for it.

So what if I could have saved a few quid by going to a supermarket, or to one of the bug multiples ? Small independents, in anything, are never more appreciated until they're gone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,191 ✭✭✭The_Hustler

What happened to the first 2000 for €5 in Eason's? Would they really all be gone that early?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,781 ✭✭✭pissed

Nah, it did leak, although nit was in bad quality.

It was 12.99 for the childrens edition (same book, crap cover). I think the sealed adults version was more expensive.

    What was 'sealed' about it?
