I am thinking of joining a golf club in the Dublin area (if they'll have me), can anyone recommend one in particular? I myself thought Powerscourt was a fantastic location and the grounds are tremendous, not to mention the Ritz hotel about to open up close by...

How much are you looking to spend?

Thats a difficult question to answer as I'm not sure what the fees range from, all I can say is I am prepared to pay good money for a good club.

For most of the good clubs in the Dublin area you are looking at 10s of thousands (share options) or long waiting lists. Much better value to be had if you look at an hours radius from Dublin, courses like New Forest or Knightsbrook.

You can lease a share in Carton, Powerscourt, South County and Killeen (my club)so you don't need to worry about large fees just for the moment. Its over halfway through the year so don't know what the story is in terms of deals for the remainder of the year but if you're in South Dublin then Powerscourt / South County maybe your man

Thanks for that, I am only about ten minutes from Powerscourt so being that close would be a huge advantage. I know Dun Laoghaire Golf course has moved nearby also but I just think Powerscourt has a fantastic location. Powerscourt are sending me out a pack with their membership details and they have shares for sale this coming January (2008). The other thing I should mention is that I havn't played for a while now. Is the course a difficult course or for that matter an easy course, which over time would not be challenging enough?

2 courses east and west - west is newer and higher up the hill. Both are tough but fair - excellent views so if you're not playing well lift your head look around and remember there's worse places to be!!

Be sitting down when you read the brouchure - shares are expensive and their yearly sub is a long way north of what you would have paid outside the pale !!

They let in a few 5 year membersthis year, including riff-raff like me!! for around €3300 a year, with no up front fees. For the quality, location and availability of tee times I thought it was a good deal. Would be interested to see what the shares cost now, had heard €50k.

they have 3 year memberships on offer too. it's still a bit steep imo although they are lovely courses. d2ww, how have you found it out there not as a full member? is there any snobbery about it?

Prices are coming down everywhere at the moment so I think i'll be holding out. Some of the memberships going in buy and sell are 2 or 3k less than what they were a year ago..

Roundwood GC. €5K share, limited rights. About €1,250 P.A.subs. Small membership, tough track. Not to everyone's taste, but worth thinking about. 15 mins from Bray.

Many of the better courses I have played recently have been very quiet. Is it a case of too many years of the greedy bastards charging silly money. I played in New Forest recently (best new course out there at the mo, for €50 too!) and we reckoned there were no more than 3 other groups on the course and the weather was reasonably good that day.

Sorry to hijack the OP's post, but what is New Forest like? Is is so new that there are drainage ridges everywhere or so good that it looks 'old'. From their web site some of the holes look good, but I guess their always going to show the best ones.

How long is the course open and is there buggy hire?

Have a look at Charlesland in Greystones - about €15k to join, great greens, good clubhouse and camaraderie is great ... annual sub running about €1,650 and developers are seeking to have the grounds rezoned for development - with the co-operation of the members ... if they are successful, we get a new course and clubhouse free of charge nearby.
