    Folks,

if you see the RTE trailer for the last episode of 'The Sopranos' coming on, turn off the TV...it contains a truly horrible spoiler about the fate of one of the main characters in the show.....

I am going to complain to RTE...this is reckless...

Just coming on here to post a warning.

I didnt see it my my bro did and he is absolutely fuming...it must show something big and it must be quite quick becuase we usually scarper when we see any soprano ad's so for him to see it, it must be quick.

My advice boycott RTE altogether both in case you see the ad and also to boycott the fvcking gobs1tes for showing spoilers.

It is the last episode of one of the biggest TV shows ever....if people are not watching already chances are they wont. Why show major storylines and p1ss people off who have been following it? Stupid stupid people.

    I agree

I have already seen the last episode. When I saw the RTE trailer I thought "Wow, would I be pi$$ed off if I had been ..".

If you see it coming, close eyes, fingers in ears and yell ' La la la la la la .." for about 10 seconds.

I've seen the last episode but even still, I was incensed by the ad also. Obviously whoever put it together just couldn't care less.

As I said I have not seen it but I am pretty outraged by this. Where would be the best place to complain?

RTE have never shown any apparent interest in what the viewers care about, you only need to see the way they treat on-screen football scores, they'd often preview a match and you can see the final score!

RTE have a dept of presentation which handles things like trailers, previews etc.

    Mike.

How could they make such a major cock-up like that? What idiots.

I'm sure there will be a lot of complaints about it. Hopefully they'll take notice and it will be withdrawn quickly before everyone sees the ad.

Saw it myself and if I hadn't already seen the last episode I'd be really pissed off. Totally irresponsible. The evening herald managed to ruin that particular piece for me

    Spoiler tags?

I don't watch RTÉ much, but they've been known to cock up trailers before with big spoilers. I think they did it with Prison Break and Lost.

I haven't been keeping up with the sopranos lately but when I saw this I couldn't believe it, what are they trying to do?

    Spoiler tags?
Why not read the thread made for The Sopranos to see what happens?

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,611 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

I avoid any promos, continuity announcements and tv guide synopsys' like the plague, it is ridiculous the thngs that are given away, but I understand in this case the promo was the same one used for the US showings of the series?

not saying that makes it any better but it wouldn't appear to be an RTÉ only issue.

Ah so HBO are ****tards too.

I take it tags are no longer needed since it aired yesterday, but just to be safe......

What did RTE spoil, the fate of Phil Leotardo? Have to say that this was really the only worthwhile event of the finale, and it was about 20 episodes too late... Great character played by Frank Vincent, and always way underused.

Wtf was with AJs plots in the final episodes? Quit wasting our time already!

It is crap the way RTE handle tv trailers... All other channels seem to show bits from the previous weeks episode, thereby giving nothing away... RTE constantly show big bits from the following weeks episode... If I'm ever watching a series on RTE (which used to be always, only have sky for a year now) I generally have to avoid all ads all week...

Something should be done really, I didn't see the ad until after i saw the last episode but somebody who doesn't watch it saw it and said he saw some guy with a gun to his head, there was me thinking it was Tony...

    Stoopid...

But the ad is the same one shown by HBO in the States. Why is RTÉ getting blamed for the way this trailer was handled?

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 18,001 Mod ✭✭✭✭ixoy

If it's a copy of the US ad, then it would be unsurprising that it showed too much - I'm constantly trying to avoid the trailers for "next week's episode" when I watch US TV shows. Far too many spoilers. Nothing new in this practice at all - people are just more sensitive as it was a finale.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,611 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

as said above i avoid trailers, continuity etc like the plague. However RTÉ are no worse/better than anyone else and trying to let on they are is just silly.

It's a general problem throughout TV that they are trying to pull in new viewers for shows and know fans are going to watch anyway so they put too much in to the trailers.

how does it compare with rtes trailiers for shows such as lost and greys anatomy?? i know from they're handling of prison break you basically dont need to watch the episodes, ul get most of the "gist" of it from the trailers!!
and in theyre overview trailer of all their us drama they showed one of the characters (abruzzi) getting shot

again, afaik these aren't 'RTÉ' trailers, they are the ones that come with the shows, and they are all similar to the sopranos ones.

i hear ya man.....but i presume the one with all the shows mixed together was produced by rte, which i had the gripe about the shooting of abruzzi being shown in. oh well, at least they have good music in it normally :D screw it at least rte have some good tv shows, would be worse if they didnt offer sopranos, lost, prison break etc

yeah, likely they just took bits out of each shows promo and stiched them together..

They didn't have to show it. They could have cut that bit out of the trailer easily enough too. Copying it directly from the HBO trailer just shows their laziness and apathy towards the viewers.

Fortunately I had already seen the last episode before I saw this trailer, but I was thinking it was a bit much to show the gun to Phil's head in it. Gives it away that he would definitely die in it.

I complainted to RTE.... here is the official reponse....

    Dear James,
Thank you for your e-mail, which I forwarded to our Promos Department for comment and received the following response.

"We are always very mindful of how important it is to create a sense of excitement about a programme without giving away information that would spoil the viewers enjoyment of a series. This was particularly important when dealing with such a high profile programme as The Sopranos, which has been enjoyed by many people over a number of years. In this case the trailer poses the question in the voice over “....who will pay the ultimate price?” and included are shots of various characters including Tony, Phil and AJ in life-threatening situations. No one character is the focus of the promo (and pretty much all the main characters were included) and we don't actually see any character/s come to harm.
To be fair, press coverage both locally and internationally, has hinted that some shocks are expected in the final episode so obviously there is a certain level of viewer expectation and speculation, however nothing was actually revealed in the trailer. We regret however, if the trailer diminished viewers' enjoyment in any way."

We welcome your feedback on the promo and I'll be pleased to include your comments in our Audience Log, which is circulated for information and discussion to senior programme management and is reviewed by the Editorial Board at its weekly meeting. Thank you again for taking the time and trouble to make your views known to us.

    With best regards
    Nina Ward
    RTÉ Information Officer

Are you sure they don't outsource this work to the local primary school collage class?
I too have been a victim of the football scores spoilers on their amateurish sports bulletin at the end of the news and on their ads for the premiership.
I don't watch the sopranos but I follow many shows of a similar vein and if I had the final ep spoiled in this manner I'd be livid.
RTÉ are **** of the higest order. To think that we pay for their "service" is comedic in the extreme...

The presentation dept. in RTÉ seems to have an interesting take on it. I met a member of it once and they spent a good 15 minutes talking about an amazing trailer they did for a show where they focused on one aspect etc. etc. When I saw the thing it looked like a cheap piss take. I'm not entirely sure how one becomes a promo's producer in there but it is perhaps like most RTÉ jobs, basically anyone there long enough can pretty much be given any job. Ironically some of the most powerful people in the place manage areas they've no background in purely because they needed somewhere move up to.

When the game(s) are about to be shown in highlight/extended highlight form later that evening? At least the brits tell you to look away now if you don't want to know scores....RTE sports dept blunder in before the ad break and spoiled it for me on a few occasions, not just for soccer either. You'll excuse me if I take exception to that. If I'm the idiot here then it must have got redefined in the boards dictionary...

apologies for the wording, was a bit worse for wear yesterday.

Have to say though I really don't understand your complaint. It's the news and there is always sports results. They always do a little preview before the ad, how can you be caught out?

How can you take 'exception' to getting the news of sports results during the sports news?

Also afaik all the 'brit' channels stopped giving warnings about results a long time ago, I certainly haven't seen any warnings like that in a long while.

I saw the HBO ad for the last episode and it gave nothing away. It was a really short ad

It's not like the Premiership is a continuation of the News or anything, so why wouldn't they give the results? If you don't want to know the results it's quite easy to just not watch the sports bulletin....

Was it the same one as RTE showed? I never saw the HBO one but the RTE one was only about 20 seconds long.

RTE showed part of the scene where Phil got out of the car and had a gun put to his head, and showed right up to the bit where the gun was at his head. This was a bit more than a life threatening situation, it was obvious that if Phil is getting that close to a gun then he's going to be a goner. The could have cut the scene at the point where he gets out of the car and says goodbye to his daughter-in-law and grandkids.

I don't know the workings of RTE but me and my brother used to talk about how crap the trailers that they make are and how any gob****e could do a better job then them. Like you mentioned, ive seen promos that look like total piss take, and ones that a child could have done better.

As for the Sopranos trailer, I saw the part with Phil and the gun to his head and actually thought he mustn't get shot in that scene because RTE wouldn't be stupid enough to show something like that. How wrong I was.

Yeah, I though the exact same thing when I saw it. They do it with the Prison Break trailers as well, totally giving everything away.

RTE seem to be doubting Tony's hitmen's ability to finish the job...

My response to their earlier reply:

Please ask the Promos department under which circumstances they expected Phil to survive a gun placed 3 inches from his head.........this would require a suspension of belief beyond most viewer's capabilities...

    Their response to that:

    Dear James,
The Head of TV promos responds to say............"It is the nature of drama to present the unexpected, a gun held three inches from someone's head is no indication that it will be fired, a programme like 'The Sopranos' frequently presents surprising situations. I do not believe we revealed anything about the final episode of this series, but we are mindful of your comments."
