    Hey,

Right, the time is now. Going to get myself the Vespa I've been waiting for for so long. Love these bikes but don't know much about scooters/bikes.

Any advice would be great. Any experience would be better. Heard they can be quite tempermental? Going to hit town this weekend and check out the shops (heard back things about scooterisland, true??).

    Will report back, Nice Wan.
    David...

Go for a 125/150 and not a 50cc Vespa - although a little pricer - you'll appreciate the extra power when in any kind of fast moving traffic.

Are scooter Island still there? Other places for scooters to try are Jack Nolan's in the Coombe and Bikeworld on the long mile road.

Scooter Island are around. Jack Nolans is now a Honda outlet, and has nothing else but that, unless carrying some secondhand stock.

Cheers, yeah deffo going for 125+...........probably a px125. I've heard this is the last year they're making them!

Two choices in the 125 (not buying new, presumably...? ) PX125 (original long stroke engine) and the PX125 T5 Classic (modern high-rpm engine, but 'softer').

Personally, I'd be looking at a PX200 - much nicer to ride.........

Buy spare clutch cables - and learn how to change them !!

Perfect, that's the kind of info I need to hear.

I have a full driving license so what's the deal with driving 125-200cc scooters.

Can you do your test on either of these bikes?

Apologies if this has been discussed numerous times.

Anyone else got some Vespa stories? My mate told me to get a good bag of spanners and know how to use them also.

Traffic is obviously getting worse so I've no idea why people are buying larger vehicles.

Can't wait to bomb into town and pick a few things up. Something I'd never do unless I had to. All part of the "get busy living" buzz.

Yeah, probably not going to buy new. Although I may get sucked in.

So out of the 2 125's the T5 would be a better option or half a dozen of one.............

Depends on whether I can my test on 200 and the price difference.

Why would you opt for the 200cc galwaytt?

Any of the newer ones aren't as tempermental - anything around five years old or so. These are the newer models with decent brakes, electronic ignition etc.

Another vote for the PX200 here too.

Keep cables adjusted, and change the gearbox oil religiously, and exercise some mechanical sympathy and you'll find it very very hard to kill it..

A full B licence will allow a full M category, which is 50cc.

...except that he's not looking at a 50..........and, tbh, he shouldn't, either...........

    Never a true'er word said!.

Although you can get heavy duty cables, but I never really found them much better than standard one's.

Good news is when the cable snaps, and it will. Its very possible to drive the bike without the clutch, its alittle jerky. Esp. moving off from the lights, ie you have to switch off the engine, engage first and start the engine!, its fun :)

Mechanically their a little gem in my experience.

In Dublin Lee in Scooter Island is the man to talk to.

Lee left scooter island in 2005!! ;)
You will need a 200cc vespa px to sit your full A motorcycle licence. A 125cc px isn't acceptable to do your full A test on in this country and you will be restricted to driving that class licence only. That said get a px125, drive it for a year or 2 and then rent a motorbike for your test or else buy a 200cc at that stage. I've never had a clutch cable break yet on me, had a throttle cable snap once on the stillorgan road on my old T5.

The px is very reliable and as the lads have said are pretty hard to kill.

A full B licence will allow a full M category, which is 50cc.
Only if the class B test was passed in Ireland before about 2005.
Other EU country car licences don't give class M here.
Recent Irish car licences have a code number on them which means 'no Class M entitlement'. If you have class M on your existing B licence, you should keep it when you renew.
Lumping class M into the car licence was never a great idea and now that there's a specific theory test for bikes, it had to go.

In Cavan there was a great fire / Judge McCarthy was sent to inquire / It would be a shame / If the nuns were to blame / So it had to be caused by a wire.
